•
Posted by: GothGuy
Posted by: Capt Sensible No one will remember Linkin Park in 20 years - we'll all still be listening to Zep & The Eagles.
Actually, this is how I think it breaks down: Radio Stations, Record Labels, and the Music world in general is ruled by money. Currently, the people with money are, say, 35-45 years old, and thanks to this Radio Stations play what sells (stuff from the 70's - 80's). Come twenty years from now, radio stations will be playing the stuff that's from the 90's and 00's. When Classic Rock began, it was new. Duh. Basically, Classic Rock got the Cold Shoulder; one was "weird" to like it. Simply put: history is repeating itself.
Hmm... If the target generation is 35-45 years old, then why are the majority of the sales coming from people who are younger than that? Hmmm...d'you think it's because younger kids are interested in classic rock, too? There's also a major difference between bands of today and bands of yesteryear. Back then, bands were given time to develop. They could send out a few albums and then eventually come into their own sound. They could experiment, try out new things, and just generally tune up their sound. Heck, the Chili Peppers released two or three other albums before they finally had their smash hit Blood Sex Sugar Magik, and that was only back in the late 80's/early 90's. Nowadays, the radios stations only want a specific sound. If the band has something different to offer, they tend to be blocked out. Most of the bands that get big are still kinda bland; their sound never really changes and grows with them, and they hardly ever try to experiment. Bands with talent usually stay underground and hardly, if ever, take off and go mainstream. People today like the processed, heartless, bland grouping of notes that the consider "music" because it doesn't really make them think. It's just a bunch of chords, sometimes with a few notes thrown in, mixed together and dressed up in the studio to make a catchy song, usually the only good one on the album because it's the only one that really gets a lot of studio attention. And then, because the songs are so dressed up in the studio, the band sounds like crap live. One of the reasons Led Zeppelin is my favorite band is because, even though they did try out things in the studio, they still sounded awesome live. They had talent. Probably the most respectable thing about them that I can think of is not only were they independent, but they never released one single; they felt that it was more important to make an good album rather than just a good song with filler around it to justify a purchase. Unfortunately, we don't really have bands like that today; the record labels won't have it.
