I was watching another speech he gave just yesterday on YouTube. I haven't watched this one yet but the other one was about how the greatest scientists in history have always evoked religion and God when and only when they reach the limits of their knowledge.

  • S'pose that's the general idea, yeah. He also talked about how 15% of scientists in the Royal Academy and all the top scientists around the world accept some sort of personal god (another way of saying they're theists). He used this as evidence against all the "we just need to increase scientific literacy and then we'll have a perfect atheist utopia"-esque theories.

  • I don't think that most atheists poise that high rates of scientific literacy are going to form an "atheist utopia." Though, the research shown by Neil does represent an interesting decline in religiosity when scientific understanding goes up.

  • I was just referring to some people who think the way to lower religiosity begins and ends at increasing scientific literacy. I did so through hyperbole, I know nobody actually thinks that. But you're right, they're incredibly neat findings.

  • I saw that one too, and it was quite interesting.
