I took the SAT in January and I really have no idea how the scores work... I just got my section scores back today and they added up to a 1700... I don't even know if I was suppossed to add them..

They're for statistical tracking of schools and for future grade prediciton (you'll get a -blam!-tonne of YELLIS and ALIS data in years 11/12/13 that're based off your grade predictions). SATs in the USA are the closest equivalent they have of A-levels in they they're a college (university) entrance test, however theyre not an actual qualification like our a levels are.
