Can a saltwater hermit crab live in fresh water?

I got a hermit crab at the beach. Can he live in freshwater, or do I need to buy salt for him?

 • If you place the crab in freshwater it will kill it. The process will be slow and painful. i recommend going to a pet store like petco and buying one of their salt mixes instead of using table salt. Good luck. Oh, and if you have any other questions about saltwater animals I would be glad to help.

There are far too many factors involved in keeping saltwater fish alive, let alone the invertabrates. You'll need chemicals to keep the water chemistry at a proper level, food specifically for the crab, and a lot of very specific sea salt.
Way to have faith hun....mine lived for at least a month. There is a massive difference between taking a crab from the ocean and buying them from a pet store.
I got them from the beach while I was working at a pet store.
Hmmm... I stand corrected. You obviously knew what you were doing, though, right?

 •
Posted by: Rabid Toast BTW I named him Master Chief.
How adorable is that? These guys are right. I've had plenty of hermit crabs. Make sure he's got saltwater but also make sure there is plenty of "land" for him to roam on. Good luck with your new little buddy.

 • if it's a salt water crab, why would it be called a salt water crab if it can live in any kind of water?

 • Putting a saltwater crab in freshwater will kill it, very painfully, and very slowly. It would be like me placing you into a room filled with only 5% oxygen content in the air, and increasing the air pressure ten fold.

 • If you found it in the water, yes it has to be salt water. If you bought it at one of those beach stores, just put out a little dish or sponge with fresh water. If it is the store bought hermit crab, do NOT put him in a big tank of water. It will die.

 •
Posted by: Bat Z PG The fiddler crabs found in pet stores are most likely semi-terrestrial brackish crabs, which means they need some salt in their water as well as access to air and dry land.
i should have just brought them back to the pet store... instead of dumping em by a creek

 • Most marine hermit crabs will appreciate a salinity of between 1.023 and 1.025 (measured in specific gravity), and temperatures between 4–14°C (temperate species) and 24–27°C (tropical species), with a good bed, algae to graze on and a variety of shells to change into. They will happily switch shells frequently if given the opportunity - an interesting display to watch. edit: and avoid keeping other animals in the same tank, those crabs are attacking and eating everything they can.
