Homework threads, a line in the sand

Before you start, I'm just going to say that Homework threads should not be banned. Why are Homework threads allowed on The Flood in the current state that they're always made? What I mean is, I understand that helping threads are good, but no one ever helps the OP in Homework threads. They just do the homework for the OP and offer no way of having the knowledge go through. They'll never learn if they don't do it themselves and no one on The Flood ever nudges the OP in the right direction so he can solve it on his own. All Homework threads I've seen have been Math questions where the OP just gets the answer and learns nothing from the experience. The way they're going, Homework threads aren't help threads, they're "Do the work for me" threads which doesn't help anyone and ultimately hinders the OP later. Once again, help threads are good, but why are Homework threads allowed in the current state they're in? [Edited on 01.06.2013 1:36 PM PST]

 • I agree with you that it's incredibly lazy and won't help the OP one bit come test time, SAT time, future time, etc. But the OP doesn't have an answer, The Flood gives them the answer, and thus they've been helped because they now have the thing they were asking for. Therefore it's a help thread. Also, teaching someone over the internet on an internet forum filled with people who are just going to blurt out the answer anyway is very hard. Walking someone through the problem step-by-step, having them do parts of it on their own, making sure they get it, and other things any good tutor or teacher would do is next to impossible on The Flood, and most OPs won't take it to PMs to take the time to learn it. If the OPs wanted to actually learn, they'd use Khan Academy or something similar.
Posted by: Gaara444 I guess we're at odds on this, cause I look at the immediate help as a hindrance since the Op still won't figure out how to solve the problem on his own.
Posted by: CrazzySnipe55 But they are helping the OP by doing the OP's homework (or part of it) for them. That is help. It is not long-term help, but it is help.
