Anime as a genre is marketed towards a more mature audience unless it specifically is not, e.g. shows rated Y7 (pokemon). A lot of anime shown on TV premiers on Adult Swim for this very reason. I've yet to see a serious anime show that is not TV14-PG. In other words, just as there are children and adult cartoons, there are children and adult anime.
