However, the establishment clause also means that the government can not endorse, or promote any one religion over others. The idea that the first amendment was designed to create a wall of separation between church and state comes from a letter from Thomas Jefferson stating that that's what it means. It should also be noted that freedom of religion also includes freedom from religion.
