Valve's "Steam Box" Unveiled

Codenamed "Piston" I'm actually pretty excited that Valve is (sort of) getting into the market for consoles. I think this is the first step to a full fledged console with PC upgradability and quality. This is essentially that, but is still considered a PC from what I understand. But with the release of Steam Big Picture and the use of an HDMI capable television, this can basically be a console. Thoughts?

  • At that price it's not going to do too well.

    • Should be interesting. Definitely something I'll keep my eye on, but I'll have to wait for more info to make any real decisions. Xbox may have to share my love next gen.

OP, link to recent shit, not something from the before time. http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/8/3852144/gabe-newell-interview-steam-box-future-of-gaming Also, Gabe Station general? I'll leave this here.
We’ve struggled for a long time to try to think of ways to use motion input and we really haven’t [found any]. Wii Sports is still kind of the pinnacle of that. We look at that, and for us at least, as a games developer, we can’t see how it makes games fundamentally better.

— so to trying to talk to a game with your arms is essentially saying "oh we’re going to stop using ethernet and go back to 300 baud dial-up."

We’ll come out with our own and we’ll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That’ll be a Linux box, [and] if you want to install Windows you can. We’re not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination. We also think that a controller that has higher precision and lower latency is another interesting thing to have.

I find [Windows 8] unusable.

So how does mobile fit into your plans? So this [Steam Box] is called "Bigfoot" internally, and we also have "Littlefoot." [Littlefoot] says "what do we need to do to extend this to the mobile space?" Our approach will be pretty similar. We also think there’s a lot that needs to be done in the tablet and mobile space to improve input for games. I understand Apple's [approach]; all the way back in '83 when I met Jobs for the first time, he’s was so super anti-gaming. In one of the designs that we’re building on the controller side, it has this touchpad and we’re trying to figure out where that’s useful. We don’t want to waste people’s money by just throwing in a touchpad. Once we understand what the role is of multitouch in these kind of applications then it’s easy to say you can use your phone for it

Do you think you can really disrupt the home entertainment space and compete with Microsoft and Sony? The internet is super smart. If you do something that is cool, that's actually worth people's time, then they'll adopt it. If you do something that's not cool and sucks, you can spend as many marketing dollars as you want, [they] just won't.
I'm sold, take all my paychecks. >consoleros buy this >steam has a huge sale on release date >UNMATCHED PRICES ON EVERYTHING >Biggest sale on Steam to date >MS and sony try to compete >they bite the dust as Steam makes a huge profit, unleashing the new golden era of videogames A man can dream, can he?

    • But, Linux. I think its an interesting idea, but they sure as hell did a piss poor job of unveiling it. As far as I can understand, the Steambox is comparable to Android, in the sense that the idea is shared across various devices. So the one we saw from X3i is theirs, but there are more coming? That's how I understood it at least, which is a bit confusing. We just need more clarity, and more information.

I wonder if there will be a controller and dedicated games for this because right now it seems more like a pocket gaming PC than a real console.

      • I really don't get valve's internet hype, in my opinion it's the most overrated company in the video game branche.

        • You guys realize that it isn't set to cost $1000, right? Its just based off of a computer that cost $1000. Obviously since its not a computer, it will cost significantly less.

        • Gabe already said that the Piston is not the Steam Box. Valve is developing their own thing by themselves.

        •
Posted by: Swible People aren't completely understanding the product. It's not a little box just for steam, its an entire gaming desktop that fits in the palm of your hand. And it is perfect for gamers on the go who don't want to drop 2 grand to get a really good gaming laptop. From a guy who does lan party's all the time, this would have been really helpful to have. Also people see the 1 grand and start running but they don't see the $500 version. And we can't really say much about it until we get the full specs
This, basically.

Console gamers are not going to buy it, people who already have a gaming PC are not going to buy it. As far as I can see they have a very limited market, but I guess it could grow if certain things happen (such as Half Life 3 being exclusive to 'Piston').
You have to remember that this is a prototype and people are jumping to conclusions by comparing this with current products that have the same specs. If Valve are seriously supporting this then it'll probably be a lot cheaper and if that's the case them a lot of people might buy one if it's marketed well.
I doubt Valve has a war chest big enough to sell their rig at a loss.

        • I was reading that these Xi devices are third party devices that my support Steam Box but are not Valve's official Steam Box. But I am super excited about this.

        • The PS3's initial price tags were $499 for the 20GB model and $599 for the 60GB model. And while we're at it, the 360's initial price tags were $299 for the core model and $399 for the Pro model.

        • If that releases at a significantly lower price and can run everything in the Steam library flawlessly then I'll buy one. Anything less and I may as well stick with what I've got.
