Making Sense Of It All

Am I the only one here who thinks there's a logical explanation for every deviation from the mainstream universe, because some days it awfully feels like it. While I realize 343 had to take some artistic liberties when they were designing Halo 4, I personally believe there is a logical explanation for everything they did... well, mostly everything. My own headcanon suggests that the Jackals in Halo 4 belong to a subspecies of Jackal I would call Monitors, who were simply Jackals who went down a different evolutionary path than the common Jackal (the subspecies I dub the Vulture). Monitor Sniper helmets are different because Monitors don't have the elongated snout of the Vultures. Stuff like that. So, do you think there's an explanation for everything?

 • Just putting this out there. No specific relation to the canon or anything. But seriously, is it just me or does the armor in Halo: 4 look less human to you or is it just me? Cause in my opinion, it looks too different to what we would normally expect. Maybe its just me. But there's just something about it that annoys me a little.

 • Grunt those were the most recent graphical adaptations of the races in which each installment was what they looked like. above-- They never did explain that(bungie, rolls eyes) It was just a firmware update his armor is a graphical update exactly.

 • Obligatory lolHalocanon. The thing with Chief's armor was an issue back in 3 also, as his gloves magically transformed aboard the Keyship (though I wouldn't know if this was explained in the comic). Cortana retrofitting everything on the ship wouldn't make sense either, as it would be miraculous if everything she did turned out to be the exact same path the UNSC took. That could have been a cool plot point though; it would have been similar to what Durandal did with Boomer. I did notice that they were thoughtful enough to not put any weapons on FUD or its wreckage that weren't in Halo 3 (No DMR). For that reason, I think we're supposed to take things as an artistic upgrade, but no real difference to the characters. This has happened through all the games of course, for instance the Halo 3 battle rifle has a longer barrel and is overall a larger weapon than the Halo 2 BR, yet the Halo 2 BR is more accurate (and the flood in High charity carry the "new" model).

Try thinking of logial reasons instead of insulting ones.
I think everyone has been thinking logical here. In Halo CE and 2 the Grunts had forward pointing eyes, nails/claws on the finger and feet, and spike growing out of their knees and elbows. Halo CE/2 In Halo 3 and Reach the Grunt lost their nails, the spike growing out and the eyes are now at the sides of their heads. Halo 3 Reach Now in Halo 4....needless to say, outside of a similar body build these things dont look like they are related. Halo 4 Grunt. Humans dont have totally different body structures depending on what part of the world they are from. People from Africa have curly hair but it's in the same place as everyone else, and people from Asia have slanted yes but, again, their eyes are in the same place as everyone else. I mean even look at cats of the world! The lion, tiger, and leopard all basically look the same except for the specializations need for their environment which dont totally change the structure of the animal. Everyone here can tell what a feline is with little knowledge on that whole family of animals.
Posted by: hotshot revan II This People seem to forget that Covie looks have always changed with each new game, so why act as if it's a suprise? They have the pointy snot, the bulbous eyes, and that crest. The slight adjustments are clearly based on the new graphics. Does this follow the same design of those pics you linked? Halo 4 Jack The body of the creature looks mostly the same but now the their necks are pointing forward, no bulbous eyes, and the snout is tremendously shorter. Their changes are less drastic than the Grunt's but you can still notice a definite change. [Edited on 12.31.2012 12:13 PM PST]

 • What about the horns on the helmet? I disagree that the classic Zealots were specifically Generals. The classic Zealots almost always had swords and were rarely deployed alongside other troops. Generals on the other hand are commonly found working with other Covenant members and tend to wield fuel rod guns. It's like comparing wasps to ants. Wasps work alone, ants work as a group. • I believe that the Halo 4 Zealot Armor is actually Spec Ops Armor. Some of you are going to say it would break more lore than fixing it or something like that but the armor looks very similar to the Spec Ops Armor found on Halo: Reach. If I had to guess, I would say that they're the same suit over different engines. Sangheili Spec Ops =/= Sangheili Zealot I've also noticed that the suit has a blade on the inner toe. This alone could mean half-dozen things. Since the blade doesn't look like it's for practical use, it could be an aesthetic meant to symbolize something. Elites are known to be arrogant towards other species and this claw, resembling the distinctive curved claw of of the Dromaeosauridae family, could be a way of saying, "I'm the predator here". The dark red could also symbolize dried blood, making the Sangheili look fearsome or battle-hardened. Moving onto something more relevant, I'd like to bring up the possibility of us misidentifying some of the Elites in the new Halo World. It's possible that all the Zealots we've met in the original Halo Games were Generals and we didn't really fight the Stealth Division. The maroon also supports this seeing how they hide in the shadows (gold is not helpful for hiding) and the color scheme does match that with Covenant architecture. I can definitely see a Zealot (whoever the hell they are) blending in with a maroon Covenant wall before leaping out for the attack. [Edited on 12.31.2012 9:22 AM PST]

 • I honestly think they were trying to portray the same or similar Jackal through 1-3. I can accept that different races/subspecies could exist since it states that Jackals are basically space traders, pirates, and mercenaries. Being so wide spread over asteroid fields, planets, and possibly rubble like stations adaptation would occur.

 •
Posted by: ansac11 I suppose that you can come up with stuff like that to fix the cannon, but these points are a little harder: 1. Why is Chief's armor different? Did Cortana modify it while he was in the cryo tube? 2. How about the guns and UNSC logo before the Infinity arrived. Unless the Dawn was carrying them before she got stranded, I don't see how Chief could have gotten them(and no, Cortana can't just change the appearance of all the equipment on the ship.
On number one, I distincly remeber hearing about Cortana upgrading John's armor while he's on cryo. I admittedly don't remeber exactly where it was said, but I'm pretty sure it was in one of the bulletins on waypoint.

 •
Posted by: anton1792 Whether or not explanations are logical is completely beside the point in my opinion. I question why there were so many deviations in the first place. Really, I think any line of reasoning that is based on the idea of "It makes them look more savage/fierce/dangerous" isn't logical in a narrative sense. It's actually a shallow excuse with no real conviction behind it for something that in the long term will only dilute and typify the fiction. They made the Covenant into gribblies because they are only there to be shot at, and it's easier to shoot something that looks hideous than it is to shoot at something that gives off an air of personality, feelings, sentience and motivation. (Which is why the Covenant felt like emotionless machines in Halo 4, just like the Knights) So they didn't need to bother with the Covenant in any sort of depth at all.
This. Also, it makes me wonder how they'll portray Thel or Rtas?

If I remember correctly, Cortana did mention making some upgrades or something but I don't think they affected the appearance.
Posted by: Grunt Warchief Why do Grunts and Jackal's different looks get explained as different species but Elites and Hunter's new look dont need explanations?
The Hunters don't need that much explaining since the Storm is rundown and ill-equipped. They look different because that's all they could afford to supply them. They use the older cannon models shown in Halo CE and Wars probably because they don't have the Assault Cannons. The Elites' changes, on the other hand, are probably just artistic. I personally don't mind the changes; it makes them look like Uruk-Hai which is a worthy aspiration in my book. Fierce, strong and powerful creatures.

 • It could also be different races of Jackals, instead of a separate subspecies. Appearances could also be dictated by the environment they live in. The jackal planet is not uniform in weather (as no planet is), so jackals living in high mountainous areas may have different features that those living in the swamps or deserts.
