Whats the line between trolling and jokeing ?.

Interacting with fellow B.Net users it seems some feel entitled to Use that blue bar or Grey as if some of us are not a bit older in the tooth. They feel entitled. With that being said at what point does it become trolling. Same joke told over and over wears on peoples nerves. Some subjects are not funny. Some would say i am jealous but really i have gotten older and wiser. I am sure i out age most posters on B.net being more of the ages of the forum ninjas. So at what point does a topic become trolling to how to take a joke. Today some one even thought they were being funny on a post. So is it OK to post about people you do not know ? If i did the same you might not take it in the same light. Thoughts or Opinions would be welcomed. •
Posted by: Recon Number 54
Posted by: Koolen What is trolling?
Putting a period after a question mark. icwatudidOP
Lol i see what i did now hindsight being 20/20. Thus this explanation should suffice. When i joined the work force i lost allot of skills over 10 years. About the most advanced thing i could afford at that time was a N-64 and that was when they were advertising Shadows of the Empire.(Spent years /facedesking on a puter) That being said i know its not an excuse just i lol at my self for forgetting proper Grammar. Thus being said i feel silly to embarrassed especially the work i do when i get comments back. *Soap box is kicked out at a Ninja Grunt appears outta no place.* Umm so yes..i do like silly threads...ones..that have..no grunts. • Joking is meant to illicit a smile or laugh, etc. Trolling is meant to illicit a negative response from people. [Edited on 12.26.2012 7:37 AM PST]

 • I think that statement about sums it up. Not to mention every point of view may draw a different conclusion about the subject matter at hand. The best way to figure out what trolling is, is to notice when it goes too far over the line and turns from something harmless to something completely offensible. Trolling will always happen and is necessary in the ecosystem of forums but it's a delicate art that few can master. • Trolling is a shock value trying to get you react negatively with comments that are not jokes yet are directed at said person with the intent to vex, provoke, frustrate, damage reputations, insensitive to others feelings, with malice or spite also to get jollies off. Even a bad troll is a fail. Thus some react strongly taking the bait then going on a nerd rage or telling said person remarks that end up in a immature flame war. Most trolls are attention seekers with minds looking to fill a small ego, or Elitist due to problems off line.seeking self gratification like a drug thus they have to move on from that to downcast others to feel smugly superior. So to be cool then be accepted by others who do the same they are like junkies moving from victim to victim until they run into a wall of some sort. They do this to gain acceptance and attention. Creating a cycle they repeat. Cycle that is hunt feed then get beaten off by others who chase them off thus refuseing to accept the notion its them not every one else or hunger to great to even care. Stalk next victum. In a way like a leach who once attatches its self untill it is removed gaining all it can from host body. [Edited on 12.26.2012 1:37 AM PST]

 • I believe that this can be broken down a few different ways. Trolling seeks attention ie: self (face it, negative attention is still attention) Joking seeks shared amusement ie: all Trolling tends to be malicious, self serving Joking tends to be for universal enjoyment Trolling has negative ambitions Joking strives for positive (but bad jokes can be negative) Trolls try to humiliate Jokes try to uplift I'm sure none of this is really news to anyone who has been around for a while. That said, an intended joke can be often taken as a troll if the reader so deems to take it that way. Intent and understanding do not always jibe.

 • Want to know the difference? If it's a good troll, you won't even know you were trolled. Some people here, however, like to pretend that they're trolls. You can spot those people easily.

 • It's all subjective and as such the line varies between mods. Common sense and good taste should let you know if you're getting close to crossing that line.

 • Trolling is funny to watch, but you can tell when it's a joke fairly easily. Usually comes from users that have been here for awhile and they have many posts filled with witty sarcasm.

 •
Posted by: dibbs089 Probably somewhere in the vicinity of putting a period after a question mark. Am I trolling or joking? I don't even know. Edit: So if I'm reading this correctly, you thought someone doing the default profile linking was specifically talking about you. Ohhhhhhhhh boy. And after that whole impassioned speech about you "out aging" people and gaining wisdom...
Again its about context. How you say something and what it is. It was a harmless joke perhaps but what if i took it the wrong way. Or they meant it as a way to troll. Its the format of it. Lucky i am not a person to get bent out of shape. With age comes maturity meaning most old people have seen things once or twice knowing better to do the same. I used it as an example. Not to ridicule them or if it was a prank do the same. In the end i do not feel disrespected so i let it go. Not going to sweat over some kids thinking to be cool.
