I played Halo 4, and I had my feelings hurt. Why is Captain Del Rio such a jerk? Does he hate spartans and hot AIs? Was he abused as a child? Tell me Flood.
-
I think this is a good enough answer to it: https://www.reddit.com/r/HaloStory/comments/3qvbn2/del_rio_was_a_jerk_but_he_actually_made/ But Yes I agree Cpt. Del Rio was an utter dick too, but he had a valid point...
Posted by: pwnage79 Or he's just the obligitory dick commander to cause conflict in the CoD-like video game 343 was trying to make.
This. Everybody got angry at him, and then rejoiced in how bad ass Chief was when he said no. It was almost a good little story arch, but much too predictable.
-
His ship just crash landed on an alien world and as soon as they land they're attacked. The main reason they were pulled in was because they followed Cortana's distress beacon thing
-
Posted by: greatestSheriff
Posted by: bergXX09 Because 343 needed Lasky to seem like a really cool guy and hero so they made Del Rio a cliche contrast of him. Really crappy story telling.
Or maybe the other guy got it right. The guy who said that Del Rio is not a leader but a manager and he didn't wanted to do any heroics unlike fabled Captain Keyes.
Or he's just the obligitory dick commander to cause conflict in the CoD-like video game 343 was trying to make.
-
It's because 343 Industries apparently couldn't make him more relateable and less stereotypical. It's a shame, he's easily the worst character in the story, but he could have been so much better so easily.
-
He is mad that he is not a Spartan.
Posted by: Xd00999
Posted by: Addison Stone
Posted by: Xd00999 Because he wanted to play it safe and not be heroic. Really, Del Rio was the most reasonable person on the bridge. Everyone just disagreed with him. He wasn't that bad.
Hell, no, he wasn't reasonable! He had the balls to insinuate that Master Chief was cracked in the head, and was making things up. Though, he was running around with a rampant AI, he knew what he saw.
Consider eat Master Chief claimed he saw: he entered a forerunner structure and was pulled into a beam of light. In this beam he saw a forerunner who claimed to have planned out all of human advancement for the past 100 000 years and this forerunner also claimed that humanity was once a super space faring empire. This forerunner then proceeded to change Chief's genetic make-up through a 'genesong' implanted in the human species 100 000 years earlier. Not exactly a believable story, is it?
In a universe with aliens and space magic, you're going to say that is farfetched? Besides, I believe it's common knowledge that human history is closely intertwined with that of the Forerunners.

A lot of people hate him but I think he was interesting. Much more than that kiss-ass (jk) Lasky and that blasphemer Palmer. And it was nice to know ONI wasn't in control of everything on the freaking ship for once. Such a shame Del Rio got discharged. They could have explored why he was antagonistic. He reminded me more of Capt. Keyes than Lasky did, except he was the opposite in his decisions. [Edited on 12.09.2012 6:54 PM PST]

I still can't believe that "What I want to know is.... where the hell did those things come from!!!?" line. WHERE DO YOU THINK RIO? Maybe the giant alien planet built from technology??? Maybe there do you think???? The writing for Halo 4 is almost impossibly bad.
Posted by: lime013 What ever happened to him anyways?
He lost his command because plot.

Because bad writing.
Posted by: Rokklaggio
Posted by: Xd00999
Posted by: Rokklaggio I'll admit, those are some good points, but have you read about him in the books? He's foolish and stubborn.
Thursday War was the first Halo book I didn't read, but that is beside the point. What is my point is that Del Rio was completely justified in leaving Requiem. That is the only thing I am saying. Foolish or stubborn, Del Rio was right.
But that's why he's a fool. His stubbornness of not listening to Chief's advice allowed the attack on New Phoenix to happen, which could have been prevented had he listened.
And how would staying have changed it? The Infinity was wounded, the Didact was hiding behind an energy shield, the Covenant were moving to protect their god, and there was an impending attack on Earth. Best case is they stop Didact. Worst case is that the Infinity is destroyed, all of Earth is composed, and the colonies are next on the Didact's list. We saw Didact's ship shrugging off the combined firepower of the entire Earth fleet. The only thing that hurt it was a hit from the Infinity's energy weapons which was only possible because the turrets were destroyed. The energy weapon was forward facing meaning the Infinity had to turn to hit any target. We saw several times before that the Didact's cryptum is very fast, and very small. Didact coud have easilly avoided the Infinity's weapons. Plus, Didact was easilly hacking into the Infinity's systems.
