Halo Novels
I haven't read any of the new Halo novels since [i]Halo: First Strike[/i]. I've been reading some of the reviews online for the newer books and most of the reviews appear to be negative.
Are there any books worth buying? If there are, which ones are a good read?

Contact Harvest is amazing to see the way the UNSC-Covenant war began featuring Avery Johnson for the UNSC and Tartarus and a cool grunt with his engineer friend for the Covenant. Ghosts of Onyx is also one of the best showing the Spartan-III program and how very expendable the UNSC regarded those spartans. Get some badass action between Spartans, the Covenant, and Forerunner technology. Cole Protocol wasn't too exciting from the UNSC point of view unless it involved fighting some rebels. Some Jackals led groups have gone rogue and even began cooperating with the rebels which led to some extremely interesting scenarios. I'd throw in the graphic novel and Halo: Uprising as well since they easy to go through. I don't even trust the books anymore seeing the crap quality of games 343i has made.

The Spartans suddenly all act like a big happy family and disregard their training (like, instead of using acknowledgement lights they just talk), ONI is suddenly some renegade group with infinite power, Mendez and Halsey argue [i]constantly[/i], and her writing style regarding Halsey is horrible. Good authors lay out everything and let the reader form their own opinion, while Traviss used the entire book to preach about how horrible Halsey is in a biased way.

Kilo-5 isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Really all it does is present a different perspective on some of the events in Halo's past. Some how this is a bad thing. :/

Evolution. It's an amazing book. As for Kilo-5, it's very heavy on the themes of military espionage, so it's kinda dry. You might want to read Evolution then Cryptum, since Cryptum is pretty interesting.

[i]Halo: Evolutions[/i] is a must-read. There are tons of great short stories in it. My personal favorite is the "The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole." You should also read [i]Contact Harvest[/i]. It offers some pretty awesome backstory for Sargent Johnson and explains the motivations of the Prophets.

The Forerunner trilogy is unique, but the Kilo-5 trilogy is very divisive. It seems to be very much a love it or hate it series, particularily if you like/don't like Halsey.

I've read all of them, except for The Thursday War (And I never will, I goddamn hate Karen Traviss after Glasslands). The best ones are definitely Fall of Reach and Ghosts of Onyx. None of the others stand out, really. They're still good though. And oh yeah, the Forerunner trilogy. Cryptum is great, and I just started Primordium. They're definitely not for everyone though.

The Kilo-5 trilogy from Traviss is sort of one-sided, if you want you can dig up some past threads where it was debated to death. I personaly prefer all the books pre-Halo: Reach. [Edited on 11.20.2012 10:38 PM PST]
