I just wrote a police officer a ticket

So today I saw a police officer parked in a yellow "no parking zone" But he wasn't responding to an emergency, He was at a 7-11 and he walked out with a big gulp. He was abusing his status as a police officer. And this is how I am about to knock him down a level for it. I live in Oregon. In Oregon it is a little known fact that you don't have to be a police officer, or a parking attendant to write someone a parking ticket. See ORS 153.058 Now back to the story. as the officer was coming out as soon as I saw that he was parked illegally I took a picture of him ( as he was coming out holding his big gulp, and of his car parked illegally. AND of him getting into his car. This is all of the evidence that I need to issue him a citation. I went on down to the police station and initiated the proceedings of filing the citation. Filled out his ticket, and took it down to the court house as per the instructions. At the courthouse I gave the nearly-finished ticket to the clerk who found an available court date. And then signed the ticket. And took an oath that the information was correct. This police officer is now going to receive the ticket in the mail with his court date. I will also be going to this court date where I will be presenting the photographic evidence of his illegal parking. He will have no excuse. tl;dr I wrote a police officer a ticket, and now he must appear in court. UPDATE: 500 replies w00t, I will be posting the pictures AFTER the court date. Due to legal/security reasons. [Edited on 11.18.2012 6:31 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: funkbrotha10
Posted by: Elite Mouse Congratulations, OP. You came on here expecting praise, and instead were met with universal disdain. Should have posted this on an alt.
I posted this to make a statement. Not to recieve praise. a statement about the common abuse of power. While this may be a small case. It is a case none the less.
No you didn't. You came on here expecting for people to think what you did was noble and give you credit, but instead people justly called you out on how sad you are. And no, a parking violation isn't an abide of power. If you made a thread about such a thing, you would still be seen as foolish.

 •
Posted by: funkbrotha10
Posted by: Super PolarBear You showed him!
I sure did. He now has to take his personal time to appear in court and argue his case. Only thing is, he has no usable argument. If he does not appear in court he will fined.
Yeah, suck it law man, its not like the officers get paid overtime to appear in court, doing essentially no work but dressing up and appearing in front of a crowd, getting paid time and a half for their effort. OP, you just made the guy some easy money.

But the police officer parked there because he thought he could get away with it because he was in a police car. This is where the abuse of his authority comes in.
Your fault in logic OP is that you believe that he was using his authority as an excuse, when you have no proof of that. You simply have a belief that you are attempting to put off as fact. The officer was not attempting to use his power to justify his parking.
If you believe that someone has done something illegal, then going to court is the right action. A police officer gives someone a ticket because the officer believes that the person has done something wrong. If you pay the ticket, you're admitting guilt. You can take tickets to court if you believe that you weren't doing anything.
Correct. In court the police officer will have to argue his case to the judge. I don't think that it will be very easy to argue his case though.

 •
Posted by: funkbrotha10 But the police officer parked there because he thought he could get away with it because he was in a police car.
Average citizens do the same thing - park there because they think they can get away with it. There's no abuse of authority. There's not even any real authority in that situation... Calling the OP names because he was doing something he thought was right is a bit hypocritical, though.

There is plausible deniability in the fact that that he may have just parked there because he thought it wouldn't hurt to run in and run out. However. There is not plausible deniability in the fact that regardless of his thought process in choosing to park there, that it was a parking violation in the end. However he came to the decision to park there. [Edited on 11.17.2012 6:01 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: funkbrotha10
Posted by: Xplode441 OP is a juvenile delinquent who doesn't like police officers. But seriously, why go through all that trouble for something so minor? The cop wasn't abusing his power unless he told you, "-blam!- you, I'm a cop, I park where I want". He made the same mistake anyone else could have made. To call it an abuse of power is stupid.
The police officer was parked in a yellow emergency zone parking area. Like no lie, you look horrible. [Edited on 11.17.2012 5:56 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: funkbrotha10
Posted by: AK FROST You did all of this so the officer gets a 20 dollar ticket wow.
Exactly right. Not just that. But chances are the other police officers will hear about it and will never let him live it down. And as I have also discussed its the symbolism behind the ticket that matters more than the actual ticket in this case.
Actually no, if anything you've just made things worse for the people in your community. I can guarantee you that the cops in your community have been overlooking civilians doing what he was doing because it's something so small and minor that a car being there for a couple minutes really isn't a going to be an issue. Now because of your actions the police are just going to react with a "well it looks like we can't be nice anymore" and start cracking down on that. Way to go jackass.

In the eyes of the PD, you'll be that one idiot who tried to make a "statement" by giving someone a ticket and wasting their resources and time.
