What is it that makes Halo 3 so perfect?

Halo 3 has always been my favorite game in the series. I don't think I've put this much time into any other video game. Every time I pop the game into my disc drive, I can't help but smile. I always enjoy myself, whether I'm playing competitively at 50 high or just messing around in Social. Every single match has the same magical feel of my first ever match of online H3 (in which I was awful, for the record). What is it that makes Halo 3 so good? The other games are all pretty similar, but not one of them has kept me coming back for so many years. Is it just nostalgia, or am I not alone in this? I've never been able to explain what it is that makes this game so perfect, but I'll be playing it until it gets shut down. And then I'll be playing custom parties.

  • perfect? no, IIRC the shotgun and AR was fairly incompetent, had to stick with the noob combo to get through Legendary they made a warthog run similar to Halo: Combat Evolved's ending? seriously! still a great game though, will never forget High Ground and The Ark

Rumble Pit Most of all, it was my favorite halo for custom games. There were some good gametypes that never made it into MM. One for example was MLG Multiteam. It was 2v2v2v2 on MLG The Pit with MLG Settings. It didn't need its own playlist, but I really wish they had some MLG gametypes in the mix of current playlists like multiteam and rumble pit. Sandbox was my favorite forge map. Forge world and new forge are much better with objects, but I miss the flat open areas that Sandbox had. Also, it was better to look at golden rocks then grey. Also, no other halo had the plethora of shortcuts and tactical jumps. Guardian and Ghost Town were filled with jumps. Also, I enjoyed HLG on occasion and maps like Epitaph, High Ground, and Construct were best for this. Also, powerups. I miss em. The jumps were awesome, and, like you said, powerups were so much better than AAs. I don't understand why they were removed. I feel like there won't ever be another Halo game that's quite as good as Halo 3. The customs, physics, Forge, theater......about as close to perfect as it's likely to be.

  • I know what you mean. I'm going to give Halo 4 a good few hours, but every time I put Halo 3 in and the menu music starts up it seems so much better. Maybe it is just familiarity, or memories from 5 years of playing - I don't know. Halo 3 just makes me so relaxed. As soon as the menu music starts I can just tune out and forget about whatever is going on with work, or family or friends. Maybe I prefer the game because I consider it to be "my" halo. I first played CE on a friends xbox, and I only played H2 in its prime on a friends account. For halo 3 I had my own xbox and had just gotten broadband, so I was ready to go! I recently played some ranked games and actually won! Still the same thrill as back in 2008 [Edited on 11.09.2012 4:53 PM PST]
