Bungie/Activisions Next Game Revealed: Well, that just happened...

So basically, Bungie/Activision's new game codenamed 'Destiny' was "made public for the first time as part of a separate lawsuit involving the Call of Duty game franchise." This is obviously big news. Bungie's word (News article): "Well, that just happened..."
So, yeah. While we're not ready to show you what we've been working on, we can reconfirm that we are hard at work on our new universe. We can't wait for you to see it. See you starside in 2013.
Summary of what we 'know' so far... -Massively multiplayer style, sci-fantasy action shooter series codenamed Destiny with expansion packs codenamed Comet. -Four games which are targeting for a 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 release. -Four expansion packs which are targeting for a 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020 release. -There will be other DLC, subscriptions, microtransactions, and value added services. -The first game will be an Xbox 360 and "Xbox 720" timed exclusive. -Bungie is also working on a Marathon game, but currently no more than 5% of their staff (nor more than 5% of their key staff) can work on it. -The second game is targeted for 360, 720, PS4, and Windows PC, though the contract notes that some of those SKUs may be dropped if they decide they are not worthwhile or not technically feasible. -Activision can terminate the contract without penalty if Destiny doesn't sell at least 5 million units in the first six months. - The main games will be retail. -At maximum, 7 Bungie employees and 10 contractors are allowed to work on Bungie.net. -The game is targeting a rating of Teen/PEGI 16. Nonetheless, Bungie doesn't have to (by the contact) hit this target. LA Times wrote an article about the contract between Bungie and there next game, code name 'Destiny'. This could possibly be some info about the next IP. Pretty interesting. Here's the contract that they refer to in the article. For those who are too lazy to read the contract. Product Release Plan Most interesting part of the whole article in my opinion.
The 27-page agreement calls for Bungie to develop four "sci-fantasy, action shooter games," code-named "Destiny," released every other year, beginning in the fall of 2013. Bungie also agreed to put out four downloadable expansion packs code-named "Comet," every other year beginning in the fall of 2014. Activision has never disclosed release plans for Bungie's titles.
Also interesting.
The first Destiny game will initially only be available on Microsoft's Xbox 360 consoles, as well as its potential successor, which the contract refers to as the "Xbox 720." Later games would be made for Xbox consoles as well as Sony Corp.'s expected successor to the PlayStation 3, and on personal computers.
[Edited on 05.21.2012 10:55 PM PDT]

 • Right with ya on that one, Grunty. It's a shame their next game is going to be rated Teen. [Edited on 05.22.2012 7:22 PM PDT]

 • You know whats kind of funny? This post has almost 600 comments in just under 24 hours. If Bungie had told us EXACTLY what OP said, we probably would be less interested than we are. BTW, did it say anything about why CoD is involved in the suit?

 • It's probably already been pointed out, but In-game 'Game Masters' were mentioned in the contract, almost definitely confirming it as an MMO [Edited on 05.22.2012 5:40 PM PDT]

 • I feel weird now... Definitely not over-the-Moon about the leak, regardless of the circumstances under which the information has been revealed. As much as I don't love stumbling through the darkness, it's kind of fun and the cat mouse stuff just makes it all the more fun, not to mention it's weeded out the community and brought those of us left closer together. It's been pretty dark, but we know Bungie still loves us. It's just a shame that this stuff got released into the public domain. Regardless, I'm still excited to see what Bungie will do. Faith intact :)

 •
Posted by: DarkONI Maybe they didn't when they first developed the Halo engine and from a project or another they did not have much time to re-invent the Halo engine since they had to deliver those games within two years, instead Destiny has been under development theoretically ever since 2007. That's plenty of time to achieve a good engine design.
But the thing is, so were next gen Halo games. If you had the ability to triple your processing power, it seems more efficient to do that then fumbling about trying to get everything to work on one third of the processing power. In the five plus years of working on next gen Halo games they didn't put time aside to at least get it working? [Edited on 05.22.2012 3:20 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Dr Syx
Posted by: Gods Prophet I have to disagree, "Massively multiplayer style, sci-fantasy action shooter" doesn't sound to me like a boring, over-done shooter game. To me, it sounds more akin to unicorn dragon tiger shark.
It sounds to me like I'd rather just have Planetside 2 than be shaked for every nickel and dime I own.
Posted by: Hylebos You don't need more than 5% of your studio working on a game that you are shooting to release in ten years...
Yay! Marathon will get the Duke Nukem Forever treatment! Great!
Haters, left and right, not just you... but goddamn. Ye of little faith.
Posted by: Kaiser TheGreat Also, going for "T" rating?? WTF
A T rating allows the game to be sold to a much broader audience. That is the bar, but if they don't make it a T rating, in no way is that a breach of contract. Quite honestly, I'm expecting mature. Now, I have many concerns that everyone does. 2 years development time per game? That's a lot less than their usual 3 year dev cycle. The only thing that sort of calms my fears is that Destiny has had substantial pre-production time. I mean, it's been hinted at in ODST. So just imagine how long they've been working on it. Marcus Lehto headed up Reach's development. What do you think Jason Jones was doing that entire time? Him and probably a small pre-production team have probably been in pre-production for a couple years. Planning this universe. Now we can only hope that all this pre-production cuts down on future installments pre-production. Which will make a 2 year dev cycle not that bad.

 •
Posted by: MasterSin
Posted by: Poe Sword x2 on the not knowing. This makes me excited for the graphics and gameplay together. Also makes me think how 343 says they are pushing the limits of the 360 for H4 though, I'll compare the two games in every way i possibly can now when i'm able to.
The thing is 343 is using Bungie's engine, while Bungie is developing new software for their new universe.
Yup, very true. Any of the Halo code would be copyrighted, so Bungie, at some point, had to start creating a new engine from scratch.
