Easter Egg reveal: Sneakernet Avatars

[this feature is now permanently retired*] Happy day-after-sunset! After years of research, Bungie engineers are proud to unveil the networking technology of the future, the Sneakernet. Where traditional network technologies can be subject to disconnects and other inconvenient interruptions, the Sneakernet provides a robust new way to get data from your Xbox to your PC -- you walk it over! I know that many of you are feeling glum that your Reach emblem and armor will no longer update, which is where the Sneakernet comes in. Just write down the avatar code that's been sitting there all along in the game's menu system, and type it in to the box on Bungie.net (described below). A few minutes later, your shiny new avatar images and video will be ready. Wait, video? Sure, we thought we'd spruce things up a little and let you see your avatar from all sides. The details below will tell you how to get your own 360-degree view of your avatar, after you use the new Sneakernet system. Here are the details: - Sign in to Bungie.net with a profile that has an existing Reach service record, and click Profile in the main navigation bar. - Click the Game Settings tab - Click the new Player Model link below the tab - Below the explanatory image, a line of text will remind you of the last Service Tag we have on record for you. Set your Reach service tag back to this value if you've changed it. - The image on Bungie.net shows where in the Reach main menu you can find your armor code (Start -> Network Status, then wait for about 30 seconds for the code to appear at the top). Your Service Tag on that screen must match the one on Bungie.net for this to work. - Carefully record the code you see at the top of the screen, and enter it into the box on Bungie.net. It is 64 characters long, consisting only of the digits 0-9 and the letters A-F. Be careful, 0 looks like D, and 6, 8 and B look similar. I recommend typing it first into a different text editor and pasting it into Bungie.net so you can easily try again if you make a mistake. - Hit the Save Changes button. We will then attempt to render your armor image. We have no way to give immediate feedback if you entered the code correctly, so you'll have to wait about 5 minutes and check your Service Record to see if it updates or not. - Once you see your armor or emblem change, that means it worked! - From your service record page, click your armor image to see the full-size version. Now add &vid=1 to the end of the URL in your browser's address bar and hit enter, and you can download a video (AVI) file of your Spartan seen from all angles. (This will only exist after you use the new text-code feature) Enjoy this final Halo-based Bungie.net feature! * It's been a fun couple years of Sneakernet, but unfortunately the ongoing cost of maintaining compatibility with our servers systems now outweighs the utility for the couple people who are still using this. We're going to retire this feature now. Did I mention we have a *new* game for you to try? Look up this thing called "Destiny"!

 • It's not updating again. Well, it's updating my 'Last Played Date,' but nothing else. :)

 •
Posted by: Lord Zedd
Posted by: i can has drugz where as mine is squeezing a 16:9 image onto a 4:3 screen.
Guide>System Settings>Display>Make not widescreen. Ta-daa!
...That only works on standard definition, not HD. My tv will not display a picture in standard, it is distorted and you can pretty much only see shades of color. Hell, when it starts on HD (1080i) the screen is all wavy and distorted, and you can't see crap. I have to go by memory to the display settings, change it to 720p to make it go black screen, cancel changing it to 720p by hitting 'B', and then it finally displays (I believe I already mentioned that the xbox does not like an HDTV being 4:3, but maybe not). I just don't see why they had such a bad typesetter. Hex code displayed with a very small size, text is faded on the background, and a font was used that leaves 2 pairs of characters with no distinguishable differences. That's an annoying oversight, I can only assume they added it at the last second and only ever tested it with a screen shot from a development kit that they could blow up in size on their computer. • I tried adjusting my display, but it still does not seem to be working. The bad thing is, it doesn't tell me if the code is write, or wrong. So long as it's 64 characters, it seems to be 'working,' in the sense that it submits successfully. Edit: Never mind, I got it to work. I either typed one of the letters wrong, or just had to update my Service Tag again. Also note that using a magnifying glass does not work. [Edited on 04.17.2012 11:26 AM PDT]
Posted by: Karl2177 So what happens when we figure out the decryption? In theory, we would be able to generate any armor we wanted to. That makes me think that there's a lot more to it than just your gamertag, callout, armors and colors.
Already happened. [Edited on 04.12.2012 1:53 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Your local moron
Posted by: i can has drugz
I got it working just fine and my TV is small.
Like I said, on my screen there is no difference between 0/D and 8/B. Your screen probably isn't crushing your aspect ratio though, where as mine is squeezing a 16:9 image onto a 4:3 screen. They should have just used a font where 0's are slashed, and B's have perfectly straight backs and a significantly smaller top section (unless I just had all 8's, every b/8 was rounded on both sides). Judging by the amount of 8's and 0's in my code, and doing some quick math, I have 32768 possible outcomes of my 'sneakernet' code. Assuming it updates exactly every 5 mins (which I know it doesn't), the maximum time it would take me to find the correct code out of what I see on my screen would be 113 days straight. Not gonna happen. I say the whole thing is bs, as from where I see it there is almost no way to get your code right without excruciating trial and error, and downloading the 'avi' downloads a 'png' image with the wrong extension. • There's no way in hell you could get the code right, unless you're on a screen the size of your wall. The in-game slant it puts on the menu doesn't help either. 0/D and 8/B look exactly the same, not just similar (unless I managed to have every single 0/D or 8/B be just one of the two, and don't have both in the entire string of numbers). Unless the only difference was a line being 1 pixel thicker, and it's just smushing them because my HD tv is 4:3 and not 16:9. [Edited on 04.11.2012 5:03 PM PDT]
