So last summer I got a new ceiling fan, it has 4 sockets rated for 40w bulbs. They are very dim however and I want my room brighter. The bulbs are the old kind, not the swirled kind, which are difficult to find with the right size to fit in my fan's sockets and rarely come in the right wattage.
Now if I get these in the right wattage, would they be brighter then the old kind of bulbs would be? If not, what would happen if I used 60w swirled bulbs in the 40w sockets? Is it dangerous to do this or would it be safe to use them?
I just want some way to make my room brighter, it's to damn dim in here with the garbage bulbs I have in it now.
My current bulbs are like this.

It'll be the same as dividing by zero.

the light won't be as bright, but it'd only be a problem if the situation was reversed

It probably will be even dimmer.
Posted by: Thrasher Fan Just buy some CFL's. The amount of lumen's they produce is way more than incandescent using the same amount of watts.
Alright, I'm just having a difficult time finding them with the right size of screw-in to fit in my sockets. When I do find them they are always the wrong wattage, or super over priced, or weird looking or something. I found one that was just right on Google image search though, so maybe I'll be able to find one in the stores like it.
Posted by: Sacred Flea I don't know. I guess you could try, and if it overheated within a few minutes then turn it off and take it out, obv. Try googling it.
Yeah, I'm really just looking for brighter bulbs. Would 40w spiral bulbs be brighter then the old kind pictured in the OP?

Power rating are typical based on what the item can stand/allow. Putting a 60W bulb in a 40W socket, probably won't cause a problem, but you won't get better brightness.
