Bungie's new game (Destiny)

UPDATED 2012/02/17:Official Destiny preorder website, link above. Destiny not out until 2014 TL;DR: From the Official Reveal: Destiny Website (Official) Destiny ViDoc IGN LIve Stream recording of Bungie reveal The premise (snippet from Destructoid article, source link) Destiny takes place in a distant future after a golden age for humanity where it has populated the solar system and beyond. Your story is after a horrible conflict where humanity was attacked by an unknown force and was near extinction. Some humans survived thanks to the Traveler, a big floating round entity that sacrificed itself and hangs above Earth where it made its last stand. People came together to rebuild a new city under the Traveler's protection, and soon humans once again ventured back into space to reclaim what was once theirs. Humans quickly discover a variety of alien creatures have taken up residence in their former territories, and the aliens are determined to be rid of humans. Music sample from ARG Pillar #1: A World Players Want to Be In Pillar #2: A Bunch of Fun Things to Do Pillar #3: Rewards Players Care About Pillar #4: A New Experience Every Night Pillar #5: Shared With Other People Pillar #6: Enjoyable By All Skill Levels Pillar #7: Enjoyable by the Impatient and Distracted Summary from NeoGAF member "MrGreencastle" 1. Online-only 2. No subscription 3. No "main menu" 4. Matchmaking and game match ups done on the fly in-game, rather than through lobbies 5. Hub "public" zones that are all 3rd person. This is where you meet up with players, exchange loot, etc, etc. The one described in the news is on Earth, the Last City and mainly in a place called The Tower, but there are others on the other planets, too, apparently. One for Mars was suggested. 6. Raids/Dungeons 7. Game will seamlessly add players in and out of your co-op or solo adventure, think like Journey-style. 8. Takes place in a variety of locations: Earth, Venus, Mars, The Moon, rings of Saturn, Mercury, moons of Jupiter... more could be added 9. Each planet/location is treated as a "book" as far as story and structure is concerned. You can play and unlock new chapters within each planet's book. 10. You can get your own ship, and can customize it. Higher level = better ships. 11. Similarly, you can customize your character, appearance, skills probably, and weapons. Vehicles too. 12. Only human are said to be playable so far. 13. Three announced classes: Hunter (like a Rogue class I'd say), Titan (like Spartan I guess), and Warlock (magic user). Yes, there is magic. Space magic 14. No word on space combat or space travel, but if you get your own ship, I don't see why not. 15. Game will have no loading screens, no progress bars. Implying seamless travel from location to location. 16. Ties in with mobile apps and social networks, ie: set up parties and missions, get alerted of new chapters available, new locations, events, etc. Customize character... 17. Races are: Human, Vex (time travelling robots), Spiders Pirates, Cabal (rhino people), and some others 18. Faction Wars features, competitive hoppers, not very elaborated upon. 19. "Squads/Crews" look to be up to 6 people, but you can imagine that you could have pairings of multiple squads, or enemies. (can't remember the exact quote). I believe this snippet of information points towards a single persistent universe that all gamers participate within. - TL;DR - The short version - Multi-platform (xbox & PS3, maybe PC), mutli-device (iPad, mobile phones), open world, combination First Person Shooter (FPS) & Role Playing Game (RPG) with possible Real Time Strategy (RTS) elements as well. There will also be a micro-transaction or subscription based economy for players to upgrade, sell or trade goods and of course website integration to keep you coming back. This will take place in a single universe where all player actions, games and data are in real time to all other players. I also speculate this game engine will either be for the next generation or already support the current consoles and run on the next generation in the same game release. After all what is bigger than Halo? Single universe, on planet (FPS/RPG), off planet (RTS/MMO), user generated content and cross platform interaction (subscription/micro transaction)...that's what. Bungie already have open access to multi-platforms, they like to take on ridiculous challenges and they really try to be innovative with their execution of new game mechanics e.g. Halo 2 multiplayer, XBL chat, Halo CE FPS console etc. Imagine Bungie's next game with a universe where all players are in the same game data, much like Dust/Eve games. Forget having a separate campaign and multiplayer! A single universe allows for both to become combined and a dynamic story evolving from gamers playing online. The story is set and fleshed out from Bungie obviously giving art-style, game mechanics etc to the base game engine. Now add more than just random multiplayer or campaign games without story/canon meaning or feedback to the universe itself. The result is dynamic universe and game outcomes direct from players who choose to create or participate in the single universe. This is sort of an extension of Forge being rolled into the single universe of campaign/multiplayer. The longer the game plays out online the more the community shapes the overall universe. Now think of the website statistics or interaction...you would be able to view things at a global universe level. This could even open things up for different games, such as Halo Wars also participating back to the single universe of other games like Halo Reach. It's this sort of multiplatform, multi-game environment combined with player creating tools I think Bungie/Activision are aiming for. I also believe we'll see different game traits for platforms e.g. Mobiles devices for minified RTS/MMO plus trading systems or statistics or customisations etc. Desktops/laptops for RTS/FPS/MMO and consoles/PC's for the full blown experience. And this: When did Destiny development start? Some interesting research... Introducing Warsoup: Claims to be Halo meets Starcraft. It's interesting to see the genre lines blur... Concept art speculation: 1. Player customisation, wide variety of helmets & armour 2. Teams/Factions (red vs. blue in one pic and also a red cape guy with emblem or leader insignia) 3. FPS weapons, long range, handgun, assault style 4. Vehicles such as mammoth style, tank style, spaceship style 5. Shields on the space ship so technology is paramount suggesting Sci-Fi obviously 6. Play spaces scale and LOD mechanics 7. Player abilities e.g. blue bubble shield thing 8. Ships have emblems as well, most likely faction/team based. 9. Tank image has a Destiny logo on the shoulder...alien enemies??? 10. Possible squad or orders based game mechanics, the solider finger pointing suggests these actions. 11. Male and female characters. [Edited on 11.27.2012 5:29 PM PST]

Always wanted to see a hybrid game from them!
Bungie have my following enough to follow the lead up to their new game, I'll check it out just from the small details we have now. Bungie have certainly earned their respect with the Halo franchise.

I really fell in love with the sci-fi/future realism setting with Halo and I know if they can create a whole new universe in that genre, Tiger/Destiny will succeed greatly.
Hopefully they stuck to that genre. Personally I don't play any of the below games simply because I don't like the genre and art-style etc - 1. Bioshock 2. Rage 3. Borderlands 4. Red Dead Redemption You get the idea.
I liked RDR but just for single player. Im with you on Bioshock and Rage...those were garbage. Havent played Borderlands. Also, what is an MMO? Thanks. Some thing like to a.i's playing a game of chess and your are just a little soldier in the middle of it fighting for one of the a.i's. You may win one victory but the oponent can win 2 times as many. Supplies will also be important, as transportation shall be used in large cause. Meaning if the enemy can supply their soldiers then they are likely to be more successfull. Or if you win a battle and let them retreat they may use those equipment to attack you again and defeat your side from another vantage point. Mainly two Starcraft 2 players fighting against each other and you are just one soldier in it. The last scene in the O Brave New World ViDoc shows the land at a single person scale, then pulls back to the landscape, shows dynamic lighting and pulls right out of the atmosphere and heads to the stars. Taking the in game of Reach from FPS to space battles and juxtapositioning to their new IP I'm thinking the open world and in game universe is about to become a great deal bigger. After all what is bigger than Halo? Mainly Bungie employees commanding and you playing the way you want to. Checkpoints given and if you are in a base you can take a tranport to the battlefield fast, or if you are not interested in that go out on your own and scan scout and spy.

 •
Posted by: zelliam I do not think it will be another fps. If by chance it is, it will need something really unique to make it stand out in a genre that has (in my opinion) gone quite stale. I try not to get hyped up, halo made fps dominate this gen of console. That was one of the reasons it made such an impact. It took a genre that was traditionally a PC genre and put it on console's and it worked. They had a huge community following from this. Its the reason core pc gamers still throw their noses up at console owners with the attitude "we've been doing this for years". I believe bungie will now employ a similar tactic and bring the MMO genre to consoles and across the consoles themselves. That's what i think will happen. Think about it, -66 million xbox live owners -60 million ps network users. At this point in time, World of Warcraft only has 12 million subscribers. This number is based on a recent IGN article, and it apparently falling. With the exception of the DCU:online, FF online and planetscape there really isnt any MMO's out there for consoles. This is where the great ones at bungie will probably be turning their eye.
If it is not an FPS it had better be third person MMO stlye or more like Max Payne 3 third person etc. I just don't play other genres that much, once or twice through and not again. FPS/Third person multiplayer is simply so dynamic compared to other games. Games like Starcraft just get stale, for me that is. Further in terms what can fit on screen and be a persistent universe while you play online or multiplayer I don't see another genre besides FPS or third person that can deliver this. Imagine a Diablo or Starcraft or platformer interface...no other genre has the ability to participate in such a large universe or game world. -EDIT The other thing is if you look at Bungie's history of games they're almost all FPS based. This is a good sign for FPS/MMO/RPG. 1. Pathways into darkness. 2. Marathon. 3. Oni 4. Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, Reach. Even Myth is MMO style. Plus the original Halo concept was third person. Further there was a scrapped Halo MMO concept too. [Edited on 01.30.2012 8:04 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: jwchemosh Cross-Platform multiplayer games are always a good idea, but I don't really think Microsoft and Sony would ever come to terms with the idea. I vaguely remember some other game that was supposed to get a console port from PC and they wanted to do cross-platform multiplayer too, but it never happened (that I'm aware of).
The thing is it's not up to Sony or Microsoft. The game developer chooses what they develop. Bungie/Activision have the resources and know-how to deliver a cross platform multi-player game. I am guessing they're looking to have an always on game universe you can interact with in different ways. For example first release is a PS3 & xbox360 cross platform game where the next release is the mobile game/interface. There is also the Bungie website to interact with the universe etc as well. You can already see XBL parties, chat, fileshare, Bungie pro and so much more that Bungie has huge experience and integration skills with.

 • The game your thinking about is DCU Sony may have let microsoft use blu-ray in their next console if the latest 720 rumors are to be believed. Cross Platforming is probably going to happen, there is a market their for people who are xbox/playstation purists. All those youtube comment section arguments may actually be resolved through online competition. Now there's a thought. I think being against it is only hurting the developers themselves. There's a large amount of money to be had there. Think how WoW has The Alliance vs the Horde. Yeah, this could be the next big thing. Whatever the next big thing is, it has to be something BIG something UNTHINKABLE and something that will hype up the next generation... cause c'mon lets face it. Whenever the mention of next gen pops up during half way though the console life cycle we all get that VR idea in our head dont we hahaha. But seriously, if this idea is the way things are going. Then who better to build the game that will be this epic next best thing? Probably the people that took Microsoft's first console and sling shot it to the head of the pack? Probably Bungie. • This is exactly what the game is (Well... According to my fantasies of it.): Imagine a game where everything is persistent much like an MMORPG. You have multiple factions and many servers that you can join that all contain one giant landscape (or possibly multiple planets). The game's combat is of a FPS origin, but takes on much more than any other FPS has ever achieved. When you join a server, you choose from a number of factions. From there, you go straight into a war that is taking place between these various factions. There are battles sprawling everywhere throughout the map. There are cities, bases, and possibly even planets being invaded by players against other players. The war never stops until one side finally wins. If that happens the server will either restart or the fallen enemies can form a rebellion. That's what I've got so far... I ought to stop dreaming right now so that I'm not disappointed when it arrives. :/

 •
Posted by: spawn031 I'd much rather have an interactive world like WoW or KOTOR where your decisions not only impact your gameplay online, but how the world interacts with other players as well. Sort of like Albion in Fable, except on a multiplayer scale.
I agree but I would like that interactive world to have a continuous and dynamic story set in the world by the developers but derived from the players, games, interactions and content generated. Basically I'd love to see live DLC style story, set pieces and rewards elements combined with multiplayer single universe interactions. Essentially creating a new hybrid style game that builds itself with continued support and crafting from the developers. It would be evolutionary, unique and if executed correctly would lead to a continuous development cycle and player interaction/input.
