Where's the pistol?!
A growing concern of mine has been the blatent lack of the human pistol we've all come to know and love in any of the screenshots or videos for Halo 2. Now, obviously, this battle rifle we've gotten so hyped up about will essentially serve the function of the pistol, and go well beyond. This is both wonderful, and could be a huge downfall for multiplayer weapon balancing. In the event that the pistol is gone, what exactly would you spawn with in the "slayer pro"-esque setting? The pistol has long been a staple of halo multiplayer, in that it's a starting sidearm that one can use to very adequetly protect themselves at least (if not is superior to almost all other weapons), but what will we spawn with, the battle rifle as opposed to the assault rifle? Then where's our lead cannon spawning weapon (Assault Rifle) for that extra bit of close range firepower? In my experience, a semi-auto marksman's weapon is not the best choice for close quarters combat (just try playing a god in battle creek slayer pro, you will no doubt understand what I mean, if you don't already). The plasma pistol, which we've seen to be present would not be a sufficient close range weapon.
I have complete confidence in Bungie to well balance the starting weapons, but to be honest, I cannot see a well rounded loadup. What do y'all think?

Good points everyone, I particularly liked the double fisted suggestion, something I had not even thought of. Again I would like to say my only real concern with it is multiplayer balance. The battle rifle is going to be unlike anything we've seen in halo 1 (similar to the pistol, hence this thread), but it concerns me, because I feel it may be far too powerful to be a spawning weapon, however, when paired with a single SMG, may be somewhat of a rounded out loadup.

The Pistols coming back, probably the reason you don't see it is because it's different this time and they don't want to give away too much things about halo 2.

If the battle rifle is as kick ass as it looks do we really need the pistol anymore? don't get me wrong the pistol is my favorite weapon, but it seems that the battle rifle will have a larger clip, a slightly higher zoom, and will do more damage. so what would be the point? As for the spray and pray functionality of the assault rifle I think that slot will be filled by the smg. maybe you will spawn with the battle rifle and one smg in slayer pro. one idea I heard somewhere that would keep the pistol really useful would be if you could change to it instantly, then when you run out of ammo for your primary you could keep up your fire by switching quickly to the pistol.

kinyo what the -blam!- r u talking about? pistol doesn't have -blam!- on an assault rifle. ive held the mouse button down long enough to know the assault rifle fires faster than the pistol. faster=better, that's just common sense. get a life.

I beleave the new battle rifle will be exactly like the orignal pistol in ever way except looks. When the new pistol shown will have a better idea of what to think. Dont worry about balance of guns and gameplay because in the last couple of updates they were adressing this isssue. So just leave it to Bungie because they always seem to do it right.

Well spawning with a Battle Rifle and an SMG sounds pretty balanced to me.

We also knew the shotgun, rocket launcher, neddler, and sniper would be back but they showed us those anyways. I still want to see the pistol.

I''m pretty sure we'll have the pistol back. The benefit of the pistol over the battle rifle is that you can have two or hold a plasma pistol as well; the BR is two-handed. So it makes sense to keep the pistol; it won't be completely replaced by the BR. A pistol/plasma pistol combo would be unstoppable! - Reiginko

The reason Bungie hasn't shown the pistol is because we already know about the pistol, and they want to show us [i]new[/i] stuff so we will be more hyped up and literally drooling when we go to buy the game.

I really hope the pistols back, maybe a little more balanced, but at least back.
