Two weeks ago I thought it would be interesting to record the 24-hour population of Halo Reach once a day, so that I could eventually chart it to see trends over time and to see how other events like game releases, game updates, weekends and holidays affect population numbers.
Now that some time has passed, I've decided to post the population data for everyone to see. This data is recorded automatically every night at midnight PST. As of the time of this writing, there's population data for 18 days. Here it is.

November 28th, 2010: Free Gold weekend ends
November 30th, 2010: Noble map pack released for Reach
I highly recommend looking at the charts, as it makes the numbers much easier to compare to each other. If you want to follow this project, you may want to check out its homepage here (or here if that link isn't working.) There you can also view the same charts, but for Halo 3.
And before anyone asks, I do plan on creating more charts to show the data in different ways. Weekdays versus weekends would be one simple example. I'll update this post each night, since I can't do it automatically.

I enjoy playing different games, i have a life, and a job. Also take note of this. Many of my friends switched to BO when it released. now they're coming back. Now that's just me. I'm pretty sure im not the only one experiencing this.
No one is twisting my words. They're just making their own interpretations of the given data. And speaking of that, looks like Friday brought an increase of ~100,000.
With the number continuing to rise.
Posted by: THOMSY99 Still alot of people, just wait a few weeks, when people are bored of Black Ops. Plus we have new maps coming soon. But most people play more than 1 game, they play one for a week, and rotate, no problem with that, change is good.
Not for me. The sad thing is my last newest game after Reach is Halo:ODST.
Posted by: r c takedown
Posted by: krekc Yep open your eyes Bungie something is wrong with Reach. H3 is a much better game and a lot of people are going back. I like the customization of Reach but all in all H3 is a superior game. Fix things like jumping, map design, bloom and remove AA's and you'll keep me and a ton of others.
So, basically, turn this game into Halo 3, and you'll have the same popularity as Halo 3! Nice. Good thread Triton. Nice work getting all the figures together!
Works for me. I was fine with playing H3 for another year or more. Does just about everything right. I still play Reach everyday though.
-
A 50% drop in most peoples eyes over a very short time isn't good. The info made available is very eye opening and speaks for itself, I wouldn't be surprised if Bungie have everything crossed for the DLC map pack to see if they make any money at all. The game hit its peak with Halo 3 and lost alot of fans with ODST. This parot may not be dead yet, but soon maybe.
Posted by: ev1l tr1t0n Updated with yesterday's 24 hour population. The lowest yet, but today's should be higher since it's Friday.
Yeah I think it has to do with the part of the week, because Halo 3 is showing the same trend, so it has nothing to do with Reach dying, just the pattern people play throughout the week. I'm sure that next week will have very similar numbers, and then it will steadily increase as people move on from the other recently released games, the release of the map pack, and all the people getting it for Christmas.
-
Updated with yesterday's 24 hour population. The lowest yet, but today's should be higher since it's Friday.
-
Two months after release, with four other major and time-intesive titles released in the meantime. Yeah, 500-600 thousand players per weekday is totally a dead game.

Great work.
Are you blind or do you just not see how the population halving itself in less than a month is dying?
It halves itself and I can still find a match faster than in a game with 3 times as many people AND join in progress? Your argument is now null and void!
OMG fast match times less than two months after release. GREAT SUCCESS BUNGIE! Your inability to grasp trends makes yours void.
Posted by: Al B Querky It doesn't surprise me at all. Competition does that. Back with Halo 3, COD 4 was the biggest competitor. There are plenty of good games out there right now as well and are still being released. But if people are still playing Reach, i'm fine if i'm able to match with others.
Well think of this year's competition: Medal of Honor- (disaster btw) Star Wars Force Unleashed 2-(again a disaster) Assassin's Creed Brotherhood- (popular) CoD Black Ops- (fad at best) Halo 3 online still being up- (enough said) Metal Gear Solid- (don't know if thats out yet) May be some other ones that have come out but ya Halo Reach has its hands full already
-
Posted by: ev1l tr1t0n
Posted by: Obi Wan Stevobi Cool stats. Needs more theories on why Reach is dead, though.
I think there are some fundamental issues that have put off a lot of people, like grenades and melee. A single frag grenade can kill your when you're full shields and full health, if you're unlucky enough. If you've taken even the slightest damage to your shields and a grenade hits you though, you're guaranteed dead. Then there's the problem with melee. Melee hits don't bleed through and the melee cooldown has been reduced, essentially equalizing almost every single melee battle into a neutral kill. In my opinion, both are ridiculous and make gameplay on small maps very frustrating. The release of other big games coupled with things like that spell something bad for Reach's population.
The one about the grenades is complete BS.

FWT - this chart shows that reach didn't and WONT die, it infact endures some of the biggest competitors out there!
Posted by: HK6
Posted by: mushroomman3rd
Posted by: Aftershock2398 Well black ops games last 5-10 mins. Halo games depend on the gametype.
