Proposed changes for PVP/TRIALS

To fix the issue of trying to please multiple audiences of pvp I decided a “starting” fix for the overall experience for pvp. This isn’t an ability post or meta weapon post. But instead something of a basis for what each mode should offer. Trials of Osiris: Trials reverts back to its OG 2015 rules and gameplay style or its season of the worthy launch. No more dominion. Why? Trials of Osiris is elimination, its how we got elimination as a game mode in destiny and has been the pinnacle pvp activity for years. Dominion is not Trials of Osiris and it doesn’t play well in D2’s sandbox and is a much slower paced/ one sided experience than Elimination trials. Obviously trials in the past has had its issues in D1 and D2 but dominion has made majority of our subclasses useless, has pushed the matches to be more camping/ability paced and grants less opportunity for comeback plays in many situations. So to fix this I propose we go back to the beginning roots of trials and continue what it originally was. Trials of the nine: Trials of the nine was the objective pvp game mode when destiny 2 first launched. Due to the sandbox being stagnant and slow, it never shined or grew with the overall Destiny audience. However, we can bring this version of trials back and separate it from Osiris. How? Trials of Osiris will remain elimination only. Meaning defeating your opponents is the key to victory whether by being a good team or having that 1 star player pull a hero moment for that shocking winning game. Trials of Osiris will continue to be the pinnacle pvp activity but now has a sister counter part where being a coordinated team makes the difference between victory and failure. This is where Trials of the Nine (a rename is probably better) comes in to play. Reintroduce trials of the nine with the original countdown game mode from year 1 and have this be the standard Nines version of trials. Both versions will not be up at the same time but instead will trade off seasonally or will split half/half depending on seasonal length. This idea allows players to shine in different versions of endgame pvp while also keeping things fresh and can constantly keep veterans returning and allow new players to continue testing the waters. Armor/weapons With the idea of bringing back “The Nine” version of trials it’ll need new armor and weapons that are completely different from “Osiris” trials theme. This allows Bungie’s design team time in between seasons to create new armor/guns and allow more creativity for pvp armor. Not only that but now there is a bigger pool of loot for players to chase and create new meaning when either version of trials goes live. Does this mean we’ll get new armor versions each time a mode returns? No. But a return of D1 ornament armor like Year 3’s trials armor would be amazing and they can add this idea to both versions of Trials. With Bungie’s team already cutting losses I doubt they’ll dedicate resources to invest each and every rotation to new armor which is okay. That part can hopefully be worked out. Weapons One of the biggest reasons we even play trials. WEAPONS! Whether that’s going flawless or playing a couple games, majority play for the weapons. Bungie has a few weapons from D1 Trials and D2 Trials of the Nine that haven’t been reintroduced. This would be the perfect opportunity to bring these weapons back and build off of that momentum. I’d say adding 2-3 three new guns each rotation would definitely keep both game modes alive and population pretty steady. But let’s address the white elephant in the room which is (ADEPT) weapons. Many feel it’s not fair that those who go flawless are allowed to claim such a reward. But I for one disagree. Why? Because If we look at Destiny 2’s activities today a lot of (Adept) weapons are locked behind endgame PVE like Master raids and Grandmaster Nightfalls. They obviously have normal counterparts too but everyone wants the adept version. (Im still hunting for that godroll Found Verdict (timelost) and hoping Palindrome returns one day). But the only way to obtain these top tier versions of some weapons are by completing the activity fully. There’s no other way around it. Not to mention, crafting has been introduced into Destiny to reduce RNG pain and not only can weapons be crafted with perks you like but they have enhanced versions of perks to make the weapon even better. This actually balances out with adept weapons and in some cases, exceeds some weapons that are only adept and not craftable. Obviously you can get the Normal version of some weapons by completing the easier difficulty of that specific activity but no adept will drop which makes sense. It’s challenging to some to achieve these weapons when they are locked behind PVE but many (myself included) have been able to do so and I am not a PVE enthusiast. Plus it’s time PVP players have stuff to chase just as much as PVE players. COMP Comp has been through a lot of changes over the years and this season alone is probably the most confusing. Comp doesn’t need Countdown or rift. Especially the new versions bungie has created. The new version of countdown doesn’t play well and creates many snowballing issues. Rift didn’t work in 6’s and it really didn’t work in 3’s. So I propose that comp stays Survival and Showdown. With Trials of the Nine returning, Countdown can go back to where it belongs and in a much better state. Rift can go back as a rotating 6v6 game mode but back to its true D1 version. As for rewards, comp introduced Pinnacle weapons. We can call these comp’s version of (ADEPT) weaponry. Weapons such as recluse, not forgotten and revoker were once known as top tier weapons because of there perks and what a guardian had to go through to get. With the changes proposed throughout all of pvp I think it would be okay for these weapons to be reintroduced or at least bring in new weapons with similar or better uniqueness. As of right now we have ritual weapons, these are less lethal than past pinnacle weapons but are still sought after by pvp enthusiasts. If pinnacle weapons were to return we can view them as Adept weaponry and leave rituals as the “normal” everyone can acquire just for attempting comp weapons. They’ll still be good and players won’t feel like they’re time is wasted. It’s about time PVP feels rewarding again and these are just small ideas I think would be a major push in the right direction. 6v6 will be another topic but I wanted to focus on the side of PVP since this side is struggling the most.
