Is Sunsetting catering to New Light Players?

I get it. A new light player comes into the game and sees all these other player with cool gear, gets stomped in crucible by pinnacles, doesn't get invited to raids for lack of required equipment, knows that they will never be able to acquire most of it and are frustrated so they quit. Bungie has chosen to even the playing field and expire gear so nobody feels hopelessly behind in the game. I think this is the real motive behind the Sunsetting of gear. The flip side is that long term players are demoralized by the loss of their hard earned weapons and quit, but Bungie is assuming that they will not leave in significant numbers. Thoughts?

  • That makes no -blam!-in sense. You're really reaching here, especially considering most of the meta weapons aren't prohibitively difficult to get and most of the pve ones are exotics that are also easy to get for any solo player.

  • The problem is both arguments are valid. I’ve been here since December 2014. I’m not entirely against sunsetting, but I understand those who are. The thing for me is that I don’t know how much easier developing a game like D2 is with or without sunsetting. If developing with sunsetting allows the developers to be really creative with new guns and mods, then I don’t really mind. If the new content is it’s more of the same reskins then, I’ll question the sunsetting decision.

    • Literally the opposite imo. I’m really happy to hear about sunsetting as a hardcore end game player. Since forsaken I’ve had my loadout basically set. Recluse, MT Wendigo. At least 2/3 equipped at all times since season 5. When armor 2.0 dropped that got me to regrind armor for a while but now I’m good again and I honestly see no reason to play anything more than once. Sunsetting will give me a constant reason to be rotating loot in and out. Maybe my special only has 1 season left and I need to get a new one. Maybe my armor and I need to farm another god roll to transmog. Etc. this (along with the ending of OP pinnacles) gives the game infinite loot pursuit again for the hardcore players who get everything the moment it’s available. Even if they get it everything season 12, by season 15 they’ll have to start looking for new stuff.

      • lol the problem is this is cutting out the gear new light players will be able to get. We as veterans got to use everything but new light players are going to end up getting shut out of a lot of new gear for them due to sunsetting.

      • Nope, none of the free stuff provides any max power gear so in fact it removes them further from the endgame. You need current activities to provide power upgrades so the more seasons they fall behind without buying them then the less gear and longer time it will take them to catch up, and each season bringing an even higher power climb.

        • No. Most desired gear in Raids happen to be Exotics. Whisper/Xenophage/Celestial/Lunafactions/Divinity/Tractor Cannon etc etc. Pinnacles etc will still be perfectly usable in regular crucible. This is a ridiculous thread.

        • There will always be a meta for endgame so I don’t think this will make any difference to new light players.
