How did cortana know Master Chief in Halo 1? *May contain spoilers*
At the start of Halo 1, cortana speaks to Master chief like they know eachother, I thought she was a forrunner A.I?

If I remember right she basically has Halsey's knowledge and personality all up in her. 117 is Halsey's Favorite spartan.

She didn't, really. She knew he was on board 'cause she picked him for the mission and everything. But if not for that borderline fan fiction tripe that is the books, the game has nothing in it to suggest that when MC comes to the bridge isn't the first time they meet. Heck, the line "careful, there's two of us in here now, remember?" is pretty much a "y halo thar, you new in town?" [Edited on 10.11.2010 2:57 AM PDT]

I would in fact go so far to say it would be quite reasonable to expect to understand the events of the game just by playing it.

Heres the facts i have the journal. Cortana helped the MC before reach. But doing the time he was fighting halsey was upgrading another copy of cortana. And on reach you was handing over the 2nd copy which cortana would then absorb to gain the new information. So in other words theres 2 copys and then merge to one. Oh and cortana and cheif get along so well due to cortana being harlsey in AI form and they have a close bond due to johns training and up bringing

Read the books you damn idiot, actually I didn't read it as well, but at least I will go look for facts. Cortana is splitted into two, one goes with Chief on missions BEFORE the Battle Of Reach. The other half of Cortana resides on Reach with Halsey to research about the Forerunner artifacts. Cortana discovered Halo so she had chosen Noble Six as her carrier and was delivered to the Pillar of Autumn. She then merged back with her other self and gave the coordinates of the location of Halo to Keyes. They slipspace jumped to Halo and the Covenant army followed. Master Chief wakes up and takes the Cortana that is COMPLETED OMFG with him and finished the fight.

And this is still the part of the story that confuses me the most... what was the significance of the ''latchkey'' data packet that Halsey took from Noble team? Was it the forerunner data or something else? Just wondering because I don't understand why the civilians in that municipal building had it and it wasn't explained that well.

Halsey inferred that (or at least made it sound like) Cortana was a forerunner AI, but I took that to mean she was just imbued with the old Forerunner data recovered from the glacier ruins... So she is like a human & forerunner hybrid AI in a way.

But I remember almost being confused to that effect the first time I played through Reach. I really don't know why Bungie is so against making their story clear. I remember a huge thread on here the other day where regular b.net posters were all trying to work out what was actually buried down there. You'd think, what with being a pivotal plot point, it would have been understood better...

She says, and I quote, that Cortana is the "custodian" of the data contained in the Forerunner relic. That doesn't mean she was created by the Forerunners. It simply means she was put there (by Halsey) to sift through the collected data therein and safeguard it from falling into Covenant hands.
