Nah, not Cheetos. The trucker diet consists of coffee, Mountain Dew snacks, beef jerky, and truck stop diner food! That is why I pack my own food, but I do love me some jerky! Also, the truck stops are now starting to offer fresh fruit and veggies as munchies! It has really helped me not balloon up.

  • Ah, I remember greasy truck stop burgers when I used to ride along with Dad. The breakfasts were the best though, especially when we got south of Kentucky. The Peerless Truck Stop somewhere outside of Atlanta was like a Truck Stop Disney World for me. They had hotels (lot lizards, though I had no idea what they were at the time), locker rooms, hotels, LARGE fancy establishment and restaurant, truckers supplies and bling store (CB's, whip antennae, it's when all the light displays on trucks began evolving), clothes store for all ages, entertainment facilities.... oh, and fuel, but whatever. Dad introduced me to grits and mush there, and I concluded that he was nuts. I liked the big pancake, egg, hash brown sausage breakfasts. It's the first time I had ever been exposed to all that. Who knew there was life beyond cereal? But after all that great food, we'd go load the entire trailer full of watermelons................ by hand............ Did I mention I hated trucking? Come to think of it, I think that's where I saw my first video game. I know it was on the road somewhere. Oh, and I got a Jaws themed T-shirt there, for the movie was all the rage then, though I was not allowed to see it............

Dude, grits suck! Truck stop diners do breakfast right, but good lord! Who eats a truck stop breakfast and then goes to load watermelons? All I want to do is sleep at that point, sheesh!

  • It's before they crated them like they do now. They were loaded either directly from the field, or at the Farmer's Market. We had several load a Summer. Many went to grocery stores, but Dad always got about a 1/2 to 1/3 of a load of them for me and my sister to sell watermelon and musk melon in our front yard, whether we wanted to or not. But I have to say, we did make good money on them, and had people from all over come to us to get them. Some as many as 20 at a time. There would always be a couple crushed at the bottom, that would stink like nothing else and attract oat beetles my the hundreds. We'd throw those over the fence into the field. Kinda odd that none ever grew from that... But I am still an expert melon thumper and can pick the best ones out of the lot, though I refuse to eat them. Did I mention I hate watermelon?
