Blizzard Taiwan deletes Hearthstone Grandmasters winner's interview due to his support of Hong Kong protest. Revokes prize money, bans him from game, and fires both casters involved.

Given bungie's ties to the Chinese company NetEase, I am wondering where they stand on this topic. Bungie puts themselves out there as a company that believes "everyone's voice matters". Would they back that up in this case or would they side with blizzard? I would like to think that bungie wouldn't sink to blizzard's level of hypocrisy, where social issues are high priority...... up until it threatens to cost them a little communist cash. Edit/UPDATE: Apparently, some Blizzard employees have staged a walkout because of the company's actions. Nice. Hopefully, they don't get fired as well. https://www.thedailybeast.com/blizzard-employees-staged-a-walkout-to-protest-banned-pro-hong-kong-gamer

    • If they just gave him a warning or suspended him saying don't bring politics here and that was it, I'd of thought nothing of it. But with how heavy handed they were, it's pretty suspicious.

Anyone remember when that one guy asked during an event with blizzard if they’ll consider bringing legacy servers back and they literally went “nooooo, you think you want it but you don’t. Trust us.” And then proceeded to shut down nostalrious which was created for the love of the game and was totally non profit. Or what about “you guys don’t have phones?” Where blizzard basically said -blam!- you to a huge PC player base. This is a long time coming, blizzard is not the company it used to be and hasn’t been for years.

      • Vote with your dollar...No Hearthstone, no Overwatch, no WoW. I'm wondering if there's going to be an organized "Play Something Else" day from streamers that normally play Blizzard titles, a Go Fund Me to compensate the player, or both.

          • Come to find out that this is par for the course when it comes to the entertainment industry. I just watched a video from a few years ago talking about China helping fund the budget for major movies, having deals with all the major production outlets and studios and all that. And of course, like others have mentioned, South Park's latest episode was all about it.

            • I think this is something we all can agree on- that this is very, very bad. What is happening in HK is terrible, and anyone who tries to punish those who speak out about it should be susceptible to punishment themselves. Especially if its for monetary gain.

              • It honestly breaks my heart to see Blizzard go down this path. They used to be my favorite developers as Starcraft: Brood War, Diablo 2, and Warcraft 3 are some of my favorite games of all time and are timeless classics. I held them in such high regard compared to other developers. The deal with Activision hurt their reputation a little bit but I was still there playing the games and supporting them. I began to see through them once Overwatch was released, the #223123 expansion for WoW, and the constant disregard towards Starcraft and Diablo year after year. Once Mike Morhaime and Chris Metzen left the company I knew things wouldn't be the same and things have gotten consistently worse since both of them left. This is just icing on the cake. BlizzCon is next month and I expect Blizzard to do a ton of damage control from all the panels.

                    • I've lived in China, Shanghai infact, for a year to study Mandarin. And while I truly love Chinese culture, history, it's food, and especially it's people, the CCP scares me. It is, whether we see it or not, the greatest threat to basic human rights and informed democracy, that the West has ever faced. No other political entity in recent history, N@zi Germany or Soviet Russia, were as entwined in our economy and politics as China has become. They were always existential, far away threats we could simply resist. But China is a different story, their money and influence has seeped into every facet of our society, and while the influence of Chinese culture is far from evil, the CCP is. It is a cancer to culture, especially it's own. And it is the money and influence of that political entity that is infecting the rest of the world. Our Outlook is grim.

                              • First they came for the protestors, and I did not speak out—      Because Hong Kong was far away. Then they came for the Lennon walls, and I did not speak out—      Because it was "not my business". Then they came for the NBA, and I did not speak out—      Because I wanted to watch basketball. Then they came for the vocal gamer, and I did not speak out—      Because I wanted to play WoW with my friends. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Within the next ten years they are predicted to overtake the US as the worlds largest economy. This type of thing is going to become more and more common. • As far as I understand it the interview was run by Blizzard meaning there are a set of rules to follow. In this case one about making political statements was broken by the one being interviewed along with the casters who were apparently pushing for the guy to say something. The guy could've said anything from the usual veganazi to Trump/Hillary comments and still would've been risking a ban. The fact that it was about Hong Kong is what has got people so outraged and not thinking straight. If the guy had made the same statement on something not run by Blizzard and had then got a ban, the hate would've made sense. However as it stands it looks it's a case of people get outraged over a guy breaking the rules.
