The Infusion Problem Will Get Worse Each Season

I think most people can agree that the community is growing more and more sour each season over the infusion system and a big part of that has to do with the amount of gear we use. Forsaken was when I minded the least amount the current infusion system and that was due to the fact I was replacing almost all of my Year 1 gear. I went in knowing I was starting fresh so my mindset was "out with the old, in with the new" and it wasnt until around Light 550 that I really started to consider infusing. Forsaken also had a noticeably thin loot pool which again meant I was only bringing along a handful of items at a time. Black armory was when I really started to feel constant annoyance with system. The content drop had a lot of really cool weapons that I added into my rotation... and now needed to be brought up to level. I've always liked to change at least a few armor sets each season and now those too had to be brought along. Halfway through the season, with all the content done on my main, I had to make a choice about next season. Do I level my alts or do I horde materials for next season? I like to give my alts different weapons to give them a different feel and experiment with new stuff, but investing the materials in two more weapon sets at a least two more armor sets just seemed like a waste. This problem is going to grow each season because the more we play, the more things we want to use we'll acquire and the more time we'll have to waste grinding out materials. This isn't a meaningful choice. This is a choice between doing content I like (grinding strikes, playing my alts, gambit prime, raids, forges) or running around doing busy work for Spider for one core. Scarcity of cores isnt the issue, the sources exist. The problem is ITS NOT FUN. I'd rather be running the raid on my alt, trying a new loadout than running the same dumb Spider bounty I've been doing for 7 months. Yes I can afford to pay it because I horde materials but its sucking time away from content I enjoy and leaves me feeling like playing alts are a waste of materials. To be clear, I personally have enough cores. I play 2+ hours a day and I've played since year one of D1. My problem is the system as its currently constituted is not fun. I want to level 3 characters with unique gear so I can do content I enjoy with variety. I want to try new armor and weapon builds across all characters without endlessly rerunning boring bounties. I was pretty much able to do that for 4 years so the idea that now I can is frustrating. Each season will add new gear which will add to the cost to bring that gear forward with my old gear meaning this problem will only get worse the longer the system is unchanged or only gets band-aid fixes.

  • In last week's TWAB we shared the current plan to update the sources of cores. We have seen the feedback that this change is not what a large part of the community wants and that most of you want Enhancement Cores removed from the cost of infusion. We sent a summary of the response to the dev team this morning.
