Pulled to the Wayside
Act II Part 2 Archive
The four stand ready, weapons aiming down the tunnel in preparation for whatever may come their way. Yet after a brief moment of tense silence, it becomes clear that nothing is on approach. "What did you see?" Bee asks. "I detected movement down the tunnel, but can't identify the source," Wiggles answers. "No additional movement detected." Patterson slowly lowers his boltok before asking, "think you could have made a mistake? Nothing's coming this way." "No way," the ghost replies. "Maybe some dirt came loose and fell further in," the Onyx Guard suggests. "No," the ghost retorts back. "The movement was horizontal." Lee sighs, "as much as I'd hate to say it, we won't find out what it was if we keep standing around here." The four exchange quick glances, a sense of unease being passed between them before Bee and the Onyx Guard take point and the four make way into the darkness. ---------------------------------- Further in, the unbroken packing of dirt against the vex walls gives way to a cutout that wraps completely around the interior of the tunnel. Though giving no sign of immediate threat, it is enough to stop the four from further travel. "Thought you said they weren't expanding, Pat," Lee says in an accusing tone. "It isn't, it's just a divide," he retorts. "Still not something you usually see in a straight line." Eular floats forward a few feet beyond the line. "Oh," the ghost says in sudden surprise. "What is it?" Patterson asks. "The gravity shifts here. Try tossing in a lump of dirt." Bee complies, tossing a hardened handful of dirt forward over the line. It begins to dip down normally before changing direction over the line to fall to the right. "So now we'll be on the wall?" "Yeah," Lee says with a bit of unease. "Getting out of here in a hurry is going to be more difficult each time this happens." However, after the four awkwardly transition to the new gravitational axis, they turn to realize they can no longer travel foward. A solid wall blocks the path, but it's surface isn't as smooth as the previous walls. "Well, this was pointless," Bee says as she shrugs her arms and turns to make her way back to the exit. Patterson reaches out and grabs her shoulder. "Not so fast. See those groves around the edges? There's got to be a way to move this thing out of the way." After a few moments of searching, Patterson finds a sliding dial entrenched in the wall. He pushes it upward, the dial sliding frictionlessly as it moves. "See," he says as the ground begins to rumble. The four are nearly knocked down as the cave section jerks with sudden movement. It shifts to the side, giving the team a sense of upward movement and pulling them away from their only means of escape.
