The “Witcher standard” needs to stop

Can people stop using the Witcher 3 as the end all be all example for everything? It’s a fantastic game, yes. CDPR did an excellent job with the dlcs, yes. But forcing a comparison between it and literally every other game in existence just doesn’t work. There are too many differences in the genre, companies, and overall situation surrounding most games. For instance, D2. I don’t love D2 or its dlc, but expecting it to be on par with the Witcher is just erroneous. Comparing a sci-fi mmo(ish) shooter that is sponsored by one of the biggest, greediest companies in gaming and has only been worked on for a few years to a medieval fantasy single player rpg that was a relatively small, specialized developer’s main focus for several years and then expecting the former to meet the same quality standards as the later is just plain stupid.
Let me give you a scenario: say there are 2 chefs. They both love cooking, and want to share their cooking with the world. One chef sets out on his own, he has his own resources and is fully equipped for the type of restaurant he wants to open. He is able to work at his own pace and take his time carefully crafting his restaurant and dishes to fully realize his dream. He has his grand opening, and everyone loves it. The second chef has his own resources as well, but he’s not quite equipped for the type of restaurant he wants to open. In order to break into a market that he isn’t fully equipped for, he finds a benefactor that is willing to share their resources in exchange for input into the creative process. The chef agrees, possibly too hastily, in his excitement to start working on his dream. As he begins working, his benefactor begins making demands. Breathing down his neck to make deadlines, emphasize certain parts while neglecting others, and twists the chef’s dream until his restaurant is practically unrecognizable. He opens in less than half the time it took the first chef, but his restaurant is nowhere near as good. Now, is it the 2nd chef’s fault that his restaurant turned out poorly? Mostly, yes. But should he be compared to the other chef whose development situation, though it started out in a similar way, ended up being completely different? No. There are way more variables to consider besides if they care about the work or not.
Side note: there were many people who did care a lot about Destiny/D2, but they all got squeezed out when their vision didn’t match up with Activi$ion. Similar things happen with tons of little developers when they deal with big corporate leeches. Just look at how many studios EA has shut down. CDPR was able to make what they did because they’re one of the few smaller studios that haven’t gotten trampled yet.

• I think it's more of a comparison of merit. People love pointing out the polish and dedication that goes into games they find enjoyable, like The Witcher 3. It's less that they want the games' mechanics to be exactly the same, even cross-genre, but more like they want the developer to put as much work and love into their game as much as CDPR put into Geralt's ugly mug.

      • People compare it because it's a fantastic game, it set a golden standard, what's the big deal?

        • No one compares Witcher to Destiny. That is a insult to The Witcher.

          • Well, CD Project Red did create a fantastic adaptation of a book series and completed its final chapter on a fraction of what most AAA budgets are these days. Yes I see your point here, and I agree that you can’t compare the games as apples to oranges, but you can acknowledge that they are both fruits and the lesser cultivated crop growers could strive to improve their business models. Ala, focus on delivering a carefully crafted project first and don’t nickel and dime players at every conceivable turn. CDPR shouldn’t be free from criticism just like any other game developers but accomplishments do show where they’re most appreciated.

              • The real problem is gamers going into the expansion thinking they where going to get a Witcher 3 experience and being disappointed when it didn’t deliver

                • Lol, TW3 isn’t no standard to anything. To restrictive for me to consider it as such.

We're not comparing the games. We're comparing the quality of the games for the price charged. Destiny 2 is a 60$ stick of beef jerky while Witcher 3 is a 60$ fine slab of fillet mignon. Forgive me for at least wanting that first dish that was marketed as a ribeye steak to be a ribeye steak.

                  • It's stupid for people to hope that D2 was more satisfying and better-developed than what we actually got?
