• Yes. Without religion, terror groups like Al-Qaeda and the Boko Haram would never have formed, and the Earth would have suffered a lot less tragedy. Without religion, there would be no stories of kids dying due to their parents' reliance on "faith healing." Without religion, the KKK would not have formed (because white supremacy was a concept in the Bible, and the KKK are nothing if not a group of white supremacists). Without religion, the world would relatively be a lot better off, but that's not to say we'd be perfectly fine. We'd still have wars, still have terror, and still have tragedy. But I say, whatever can be done to lessen the burden should be done. And getting rid of religion would lessen the burden

  • Pretty sure people are assholes whether they’re religious or not. If you got rid of religion people would just find something else to fight about. Tribalism, nationalism, political ideologies, racism etc. etc. Human beings are very good at finding excuses to kill each other - religion is just one of those excuses.

  • To properly answer that question, you would have to think of all the implications this scenario would have on our human nature. No religion would perhaps imply one of the following: 1. Humans would be much more rational, less emotional. Ok, that could be a good thing albeit a less exciting world. 2. Humans wouldn’t care as much about discovering truth or meaning, hence would never had the need for creation myths/personal gods/religion. I wouldn’t want us to lose this aspect of humanity.

    • Mm, I don’t know how true it is, but wasn’t science hugely influenced by the debunking of god and myths?? And likely caused every major scientific breakthrough in the early 1400??

    • Everybody that said yes needs to watch the South Park episode where everyone is atheist and they kill each other over "the great question".

        • "I have come too early," he said then; "my time is not yet. This tremendous event is still on its way, still wandering; it has not yet reached the ears of men. Lightning and thunder require time; the light of the stars requires time; deeds, though done still require time to be seen and heard. This deed is still more distant from them than the most distant stars-and yet they have done it themselves."

          • As an atheist, I can firmly say "no." While religion has led to conflict on many occasions, it's also important to note that humans will find conflict no matter what. With that said, the core beliefs of many religions revolve around the idea of acting in the name of the greater good. Most people only pretend to do this, unwilling to do anything that takes effort, but it has certainly created some individuals that contributed to society in a significant way. Like, say, Pope Francis. While I may not subscribe to the belief in a higher power, I can't deny the positive effect that a religious ideology can have on induviduals in a society. And it's not my place to claim that they should stop believing in something just because I disagree with it.

              • Even if you are not a believer.... 1. Religion has served an important role in helping human beings manage their fear of death, and the pain of loss and grief throughout history. 2. Religion has served an important role in the transmission of culture, and the formation and transmission of moral codes of behavior at a time before there was widespread literacy or education. 3. Much of the evil that people blame on religion isn't due to religion....its due to the CORRUPTION of religion and its perversion to serve other, more venal agendas. Most notably power, greed, and tribalism. If it weren't for religion warlords and despots would use some OTHER means of inspiring fear and hatred to control people. If it weren't for religion, their authoritarian followers would just FIXATE on some reason to give in to their aggressive tendencies and fear of difference. Religion isn't the enemy. Authoritarianism and Tribalism are.

Idea of god was born from peoples weaknes, fears and shit like that. Without all this mental issues, there is no place for religions and god. So yes, world would be better without need for cure like that. Peeople would be much better if they do not need religion. PS. And of course world would be better without trash like Destiny 2.

                • I agree and disagree. I view religion as hope. I respect humans that have a faith, because even though people can do horrible things to each other, they can never take away each other's faith, and that makes them stronger. I have my father's Holy Bible, and though I do not fully agree or understand or have faith in that book, it makes me stronger because it connects me to my father. As I said before, I think of religion as hope. Hope for the future, hope that tomorrow will be better. I respect that hope.

                • Take a good hard look at the old Soviet Union, a land that fought to eradicate faith in anything other than the state for decades. Looked like hell on earth to me: gulags, secret police, and half again as many people killed by the state as Hitler managed to wipe out. In the end, though, it's irrelevant. I believe God exists because the evidence spread throughout creation indicates the presence of a Creator. Just like, when I see a grandfather clock, I believe in the person who constructed it.

                • Maybe hundreds and thousands of years ago it could be seen as more detrimental, but nowadays religion provides help to local communities and offers comfort to people who need it Even if you don't believe in God, I'm sure you can appreciate how much good a church generally does for people. Just Google, "local soup kitchens" to see what I mean, 99% of them will be held/hosted by a church I'm not here to argue or to start a flame war, but religion really is a good thing

                • It would be a better place if people didn't believe in things without a single shred of evidence, especially on the scale of religion.

                  • If current events teach us anything, it's that people we always find reasons for divisions. If it's not religion, it's race, sex, sexual orientation, or a myriad of other reasons. The sad truth about our world is that there always seems to be small minded people who attempt to denigrate/marginalize others in an effort to make themselves feel better. Our world would be such a better, and more peaceful, place if we simply viewed others the same as ourselves.

                  • Probably not, religious beliefs don’t cause people to do bad things, bad people just use it as a justification.
