Power fantasy was a thing in Destiny. Do you miss it?
Not a ''screw you Bungie'' wall-of-text, no hate messages or anything of the sort. Just a former Destiny player who used to enjoy the franchise for what it has become throughout the course of 3 wonderful, albeit rocky years.
I reinstalled D1 about 3 days ago. Some guy on Reddit was mentionning the modifiers(modifiers were a thing! Crazy right?) for the Heroic SIVA playlist, and I told to myself:''hey, why not give it a try again.'' Been some time since I felt this powerful as a Guardian, running and gunning, spamming abilities, melting alien faces with both sword and shotgun in the same loadout, rekindling with fantastic exotic weapons with unique mechanics like Nechrochasm's thrall explosion on kill, or the Windscar-esque ability of the Bolt-Caster. I even decided to go back to my quest of dropping the godroll Imago Loop(will probably never drop).
What I am trying to say is, it'd be fun if things could go back to what they were. I never thought that less than 3 months after D2 release I'd be back on D1. I am at this point.
I wish that power fantasy could be a thing in D2 as much as it still is in D1...

5 RepliesD1 had limited power fantasy. Icebreaker. Gjallarhorn. Ability spam. Super spam. That's it. More revisionist history with someone mentioning the nechrochasm - a gun that the few were able to get it, because lets be honest the droprate on the crux of crota was horrendous, hated it because it was a wet noodle and useless.

5 RepliesYeah I miss it. We'll get back up though, we always do. Ghaul blew up all our powerful gear, but we will find new gear, forge new weapons, rise again to glorious heights. Ghaul dealt us a heavy blow, but we are not broken.

I've been replaying D1 for a few weeks now. I had my super 4 times in one pvp match!! Ikr! D2 who? ;)

They took focus off of the fun/power aspects of the game in favor of balance... But both suffered because of it...

2 Repliesnope, but hey if people want it i don't see any reason for bungie to not add in a "can i play daddy" ala Wolfenstein lvl diffculty to raids and strikes. aggressive enemy AI equipped with pea shooters while every shot you take is equivalent of a tactical nuke. maybe not give as good of loot. we know Bungie plans to add in more difficult Heroic strikes, so why not also go the other way?

That’s why I play Warframe. They let your characters actually be powerful. Like to the point where it’s kind of crazy at times. They don’t put any stupid restrictions on how strong you can be.

1 ReplyD1 was more about individual power. D2 is more about team based power. Examples: pvp. The team shots vs a lone wolf with good thumbs and a sniper or aping with a shotgun to change the tide. Pve. If you combine all 3 players, you can melt entire areas with not even breaking a sweat. The issue is, not everyone always plays together, or the mechanics are not being utilized. I realized this doing nightfall prestige help over the weekend. I have memorized every square inch of all the strikes. Where to use my super and how to create the most orbs for my team. When I would be with 2 other like minded players, the challenges in place are a breeze and we do feel “powerful”... but remove one of those players that does not know all of the intricate details of a prestige nightfall, we began to feel the pressure and we feel less powerful. So on so forth. I came to appreciate the aspect of d2 more and I started understanding the concept. The funny thing is, the only thing that has changed is how tough the ads are and how endgame mechanics are designed a little better as far as relying on more players. You could always have team shot in d1 and it would work actually better than in d2 because of the lower ttk. Or you could always chain everything in pve end game content, but we did not have too. So the question is, are asking, do we want an easier game, or more of a team based game?

1 Reply... If anything the power fantasy in D1 was... weak but serviceable at best. Personally I always thought Bungie should have pushed harder for more visual ways that our characters actually evolved as we played. Not just weapons... by why not abilities? Why aren't we getting more abilities in dlc/expansions? The only time we ever got a power spike was TTK when we got new subclasses. I shouldn't rely completely on exotics to have a somewhat interesting gamestyle.

5 RepliesSo much exaggeration. D2 has better balance, and people say it lost its power fantasy. I feel more powerful than ever before, and not overpowered at the same time. Sunbreaker was super OP, Striker and Defender were super under-powered. Now, everything feels great. Again, people say D1 feels so much better, but I mained a Titan throughout Y1 and TTK, and I can say D2 is just flat out better. I feel more powerful because I don't get two tapped by Thorn. I don't get killed by Blink/Shotgun. I don't get Sniped by Icebreaker or Patience and Time. I actually get to use all of my abilities and have gun fights instead of playing the 'one hit kill game'. Power Fantasy is still there, its just so well balanced people think its gone. Some people seem to think overpowered = power fantasy. They are right of course, but that isn't fun gameplay. You can still be powerful and be balanced.

Pop the pole dancer super while wearing Raider Flux and tell me you don’t feel powerful.... in all seriousness though... they could just adjust the ability rates in PvE... they were able to do this with Daybreak modifiers without impacting PvP so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible to do it here.... I’m intrigued by the masterworks weapons orb generating abilities, which will hopefully lead to getting supers a couple more times per strike for example

Probably the biggest complaint I have. I have felt no difference in power since hitting level 20. A few exotics (read Orpheus Rigs) have boosted the power fantasy but that is it. 305 should feel different than 240 in a Nightfall.

In a sequel shouldn't it be the same at its core with improvements. I don't neccessarily have a problem with D1 gear being in D2 but why bring back some and not all.
