My worry with Curse of Osiris - Religious themes?
Hey devs and guys!
I was just going to buy the new expansion for destiny 2 today, but ended up reading about it a bit first. I went to eurogamer and it seemed really cool, but unfortunately I don't think I am going to buy it.
The reason being that I don't like the religious themes which are being put in the game, ie. an "altar" where you will be rewarded with Vex weapon or some kind of "prophecies"/quests, where you also get gear.
I know for others this might be a minor issue, but I just can't stand when religion gets put in game, where it plays no role - like a looter rpg which Destiny 2 is.
Some of you might be able to figure my faith out from my battletag, but please, stay on topic of my worry - I might totally have misunderstood what was meant with altar/prophecies, so would love to hear more / discuss further - especially from a dev, but also anyone else.

The distance you can extend your religious preferences ends at other people’s noses. Believe what you want and practice what you want, but it will not and should not have an impact on what others do.

I guess I'm not following your objection. I don't see how this "reglion" inspired theme in CoO impacts your right to practice your religion. If you or your religion can't make the distinction between what is a real religion and what is a fictious "religious" theme in a video game then maybe you shouldn't be playing videogames. I'll state here I'm not religious in any way but I support the right of others to practice theirs. If this was a game that made Muslims practice Christianity or vice versa then maybe you'd have a valid complaint. However, this is not the case. So your complaint has no merit.

4 RepliesSerious question. Did you play Destiny on console or did you just start with D2 on PC? If you had played the last 3 yrs you should know that this game revolves around different myths, religions, and legends. From around the world and literature. It is the core of the game. Therefore, if this is a problem, you should probably not be playing it. Have nice day.

Many people below have already explained why so I will not waste time repeating the obvious. If there is anyone who should be outraged at a form of religion in a video game it's me. -blam!-ing religion has been the bane of my entire childhood, parents forcing me to go to their superficial gatherings, the hours I've wasted in that place. But I am not outraged because it is a game. End of discussion as far as I'm concerned.

Religion definitely has a place in RPGs. Look at the best fantasy or sci-fi novels, fully fleshed-out worlds inevitably will include lore-appropriate religions.

Well, my friend, destiny is already linked to religion through multiple aspects, the Wisecrack YouTube channel already did a philosophy video on it.

Have you even been paying at least a bit of attention to what the entire goal of Destiny is? To protect that giant globe in the sky "The Traveler" which is basically a god to earth because of what it did. Get over it. Its a FANTASY religion, not an actual religion. It would be one thing if it was shoving something like Christianity down your throat but that is the furthest from the truth. Its a fantasy game. Something you should be familiar with like all other religions.

Well Osiris always has been a bit of a religious figure, considering he has an entire [i]cult[/i]. So the symbology here is appropriate. As for Destiny as a whole, religious belief and faith have always been a core of the game's story. The very premise of Destiny, of "Light vs Darkness" is just a reflection of the conception of "Good vs Evil" in say like the Bible. I mean just think about D1 for a bit here. Your character gets brought into a world he doesn't understand, and is drafted into a war he knows nothing about. You're meant to assume the Traveller is good. You're meant to have [i]faith[/i]. Sticking with D1, even your enemies are religious in a sense. The Vex could not understand the Darkness, or the Black Garden in more specific terms. Even they, which practically existed outside of time, couldn't fathom what the Darkness was, what it's goals were. So they turned to worship it. The Hive's very description in the grimoire describes their war against the Light as more of a "crusade". A holy war. And I mean, I think it's fair to call the Speaker the "holy prophet" of the Destiny universe. So in closing, it's not accurate to say Destiny isn't a place for religious ideas to manifest themselves. The Destiny universe is [i]built[/i] on concepts of religion, after all.

The hive from destiny 1 have always had a far greater religious aspect to them so you a bit late to get upset about it. They have alters, shines, gods, acolytes etc.
