“SERA,” her Ghost cried out, chirping wildly, “THE CLOUDS!” The Hunter jerked her head away from the shouting Ghost, wincing in surprise. “Agh, geeze relax. What about them?” “There’s something coming out of them!” Sera skipped to the side, looking around the side of the small building. She watched, as several, bulbous objects floated out of the thick, black clouds. The Hunter's blood turned to ice: Cabal ships –a lot of them. How the hell did they get here? Why didn’t the sensors pick them up? The instant she spotted them, sirens rang out all along the Tower. Guardians snapped to attention, readying weapons, and scanning the skies for the threat. The civilians, we gotta get them out of here! Sera turned back towards Tess, “You need to get out of here, now!” “MISSILES, INCOMING!” The Ghost warned. Sera glanced back up at the ships, and watched as a salvo of missiles lanced through the air, towards the back end of the Tower. The ground beneath her boots trembled, as the rockets impacted along the wall. Shit, the Vanguard! A trio of missiles fired from the leadmost ship, arcing up into the air, and descending down towards the courtyard. In an instant, Sera scanned the courtyard, and found exactly what she had been hoping for: Titans, several of them, scattered all throughout the Tower. “TITANS,” she barked, as loud as she could, “SHIELDS UP, NOW! PROTECT THE CIVILIANS!” The Defenders obeyed, and eight purple domes flashed to life, around the courtyard. Both Guardians and civilians alike rushed towards the domes nearest to them, huddling together against their Titan protectors, as they held their shields up. Sera watched a slight bluish blur, as Tess Everess mantled over her desktop, and rushed toward the nearest Titan at breakneck speed. Sera’s eyes darted back up, towards the missiles, as they sped towards the courtyard. There were still too many civilians, running for cover. We have to buy them time. She raised her hand to the sky, summoning a pistol of flame and sunfire. She levelled the Golden Gun, and fired three rounds into the sky. The streams of sunlight struck the three missiles, destroying them in midair. A chorus of cheers rang throughout the courtyard. More missiles shot forth, this time from several ships, rather than just the large one at the front of the fleet. Shit… Slowly, but surely, Sera watched as more Hunters stepped out of their bubbles, and raised their hands to the sky. Seven Hunters now stood throughout the courtyard, flaming pistols in hand. They fired into the sky, destroying more of the missiles. Most of the shots were dead-on, but many still missed their marks. Sera pushed her Light forth once again, firing more rounds into the air. One missile, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. With every shot she fired, another missile blossomed into a flaming flower, in the sky. It strained her, to use so much of her Light, in such a way; still, she couldn’t afford to stop –not until everybody was safe. There were so many missiles. These Cabal didn’t take kindly to the Hunters shooting down their volleys. One by one, the other Hunters collapsed to the ground, their Light exhausted. Nearby Guardians pulled them inside of the Wards, scattered throughout. They could no longer keep taking down the seemingly unending missile salvo. Even Sera felt that her efforts wouldn’t matter enough. She couldn’t fire fast enough. Not right now, at least. She stared down at her left hand, for a moment. “Sera, no,” her Ghost cried out a warning. “You’ll strain your Light too much.” She shook her head, in response, “It’s worth it.” “You’ll kill yourself!” “Stand by for resurrection, Ghost.” She raised for other hand to the sky, summoning forth a second Golden Gun. She scanned the sky, learning the trajectory of every single missile she saw. Her Gunslinger’s Trance was at full power, now. This is my city, you fat ugly elephants. This is my HOME! You think you’re gonna come barging into my home, and shoot us up? I’ll burn every last one of you! Dozens of missiles raced towards the Tower. Sera stood her ground, firing shot after shot of golden fire into the air, annihilating the missiles. With every shot, she felt her life force draining from her body; still, she kept firing. Her vision blurred, and her legs began to shake and buckle. Twenty-six shots later, she could no longer keep the second Golden Gun active, and it fell from her grasp, disappearing in an orange puff, as it hit the ground. She forced her right arm to steady, as she fired off two more rounds. Two more missiles exploded, so close that the concussive force of the explosions hit her in the chest, rocking her back. She was spent. She couldn’t keep going, any longer. The Hunter scanned the courtyard, once more. Dozens of Guardians and civilians were huddled within the cluster of Wards of Dawn, watching her with awe and worry. Despite her best efforts, a handful of missiles had made it through. At least they’re all safe, now. The first missile landed directly at her feet. In a blinding flash of fire and pain, Sera’s world went black.

Tell you what: Rather than another excerpt, I'll give you a character bio for the main characters. Sera: A Hunter, and member of the Dead Militia, who once studied under the famous Cayde-6, and later, under Cayde's friend, Tevis. Other notable mentors of Sera come in the form of Lord Shaxx and Lord Saladin. Sera was the leader of Fireteam Horus, and led the Titans Adam and Dante to victory in the first Trials of Osiris tournament, defeating Wraith-7 and Fireteam Anubis. The two Fireteams worked in tandem to defeat Crota and Oryx, though at great cost. Sera later became the first of the new Iron Lords, after descending into the SIVA Replication Chamber, and destroying SIVA once and for all. Although originally a Gunslinger, Sera is also well-versed in the ways of the Bladedancer. After learning the ways of the Nightstalker from Tevis, shortly before his heroic passing, Sera's talents with the Void Bow were second-to-none, earning her the nickname "Demon Hunter." During their time together, Wraith-7 taught Sera a special (albeit forbidden) technique to use in conjunction with her Shadowshot. Although normally cold, Sera values her fireteam members closely, and is willing to kill anyone and anything who threatens them. Their trials against Crota and Oryx have opened her eyes to the reality of how powerful the Darkness can be, and thus, she resolves within herself to continue to strengthen her Light, to combat the ever-growing danger. Sera sees herself as a living weapon, whose only purpose is to continue to kill. In times, such as the Age of Triumph, this outlook conflicts her, as she begins to wonder what she is supposed to do, whenever peace truly does come back to their world. Adam: A Titan, regarded among the Tower as a Crucible Legend. After his climactic showdown with Sera, he was recruited as a member of Fireteam Horus. He later joined the Dead Militia alongside Sera and Dante, after defeating Fireteam Anubis in the first Trials of Osiris tournament. From a humble beginning, and a rather harsh first lesson from the Hunter Sera, Adam grew into an incredibly powerful Striker. Though Adam has also shown talent with Defender, he never learned the ways of the Sunbreaker. Unlike most Titans, Adam prefers to analyze situations, before charging in. Lord Shaxx employed the Titan as a Crucible Mentor, due to his natural leadership, and prodigious ability to analyze the ebb and flow of combat. His calm, collective demeanor is what allowed him to learn new ways, with which to channel the Havoc State into his own body -becoming the first Titan to maintain the Havoc State for a prolonged period of time, rather than unleash it all in an instant. Together, Fireteam Horus and Anubis raided the Hellmouth, and defeated Crota. It was Adam, and his empowered Havoc State, which allowed him to trade blows with the Hive God, until finally severing the Knight's arm, and using his own sword to cut off his head. This moment was regarded by Wraith-7 as "The time when his Light burned brightest." Normally the most level-headed of the Fireteam, Adam is prone to anger, when one of his Fireteam members is killed. Many creatures of the Darkness -as well as opposing Guardians in the Crucible- have felt the force of Adam's fury, whenever one of his friends falls. The battle with The Taken King hardened the Titan to the reality that, sometimes, rage and power alone cannot save those he wishes to protect, and that there are some forces which even his immense strength cannot undo. Having only ever known battle, since his resurrection, Adam has come to treasure the moments of peace, gleaned during the Age of Triumph. He continues to dedicate his time towards mentoring new Guardians in the Crucible, and assisting his fellow Fireteam members. Dante: A Titan, who studied under Adam. Dante was recruited, alongside Adam, as a member of Sera's Fireteam Horus, and later joined the Dead Militia. Although originally a Striker, like his mentor, Dante eventually branched out to become a Defender, instead. Contrary to most Defenders, Dante's fighting style is much more aggressive, believing that the best defense is a strong offense. Dante is even capable of turning his Force Barrier and Ward of Dawn into weapons, shattering them at will, and using the shards as lethal shrapnel. Dante was first noticed by Sera and Adam during a Crucible match, where the (then) new Guardian had fought alongside his mentor with astonishing results. Dante prefers to keep things simple: give him a target, and he'll take it down. This, however, does not make Dante a simpleton. He is an incredible fighter, and a natural brawler. His instincts in battle are deceptively keen, and he can learn an opponents fighting style -and even predict their movements- by simply watching them for a moment. Although still relatively new to Guardianship at the time, Dante joined Fireteam Horus and Anubis during the raid on the Hellmouth, proving his power, as he traversed the Abyss maze ahead of the team, clearing the path almost single-handedly, while stating that he did not feel the weight of the immense Darkness in the area, as the others did. His keen sight and battle instinct also aided him in aiming a perfectly-timed rocket directly at Crota's Sword, throwing its path off course just barely enough for Adam to counterattack, sever the Hive God's hand, and decaptitate him with his own sword. His Ward had also been paramount to their success, as it preserved the lives of the other fireteam members, beneath a relentless assault from Crota's spawn. The fight against The Taken King opened the young Guardian's eyes to the great power of the Darkness; though, unlike the others, this only fueled the Guradian's lust for combat. Now, Dante seeks to hone his skills, by challenging the strongest enemies he can find, and facing them alone. Such fights have been the cause of many of his hundreds of deaths, but with each fight -win or lose- the Titan comes back stronger and more formidable than before. A warrior by nature, Dante prefers to be wherever the action is. He has grown bored, since the dawning of The Age of Triumph, and frequently ventures out in search of more powerful opponents to kill. The more challenging the fight becomes, the more that he seems to enjoy himself. Wraith-7: The leader of the Dead Militia, and the former leader of Fireteam Anubis. Wraith-7 is an Exo Warlock, acknowledged as the Crucible's top-ranked fighter, and further acknowledged by the Warlocks as the most powerful Voidwalker in history, even beating out the legendary Ikora Rey. Wraith-7's origins are a mystery, even to his friends. Ikora Rey states that Wraith had come to her, long ago, as a student seeking instruction in all three of the Warlock Attunements. His power grew at a never-before-seen rate, and it wasn't long before student surpassed master. Wraith frequents the Crucible, demolishing entire teams by himself, as if it were nothing more than a game. His skills in combat are so incredible, most Guardians swear that he had to have purposely thrown the match between Anubis and Horus during the Trials of Osiris -though he states that he had simply been outplayed. Wraith normally displays a carefree and rather lax demeanor. He often conducts his work with a childlike sense of wonder and enjoyment. This does no justice to the Exo's intelligence and wisdom. Most Guardians surmise that his attitude is simply his way of maintaining his sanity and humanity, while delving into subjects of the most inhumane nature. He is not afraid to offer advice and instruction to his fellow Guardians, but has been under careful scrutiny, after word had gotten out about the Warlock teaching Sera a void technique which was strictly forbidden to Hunters: Energy Drain. Though Wraith had done nothing of note, during the raid on the Hellmouth, it was noted by the other members of Anubis that he had only decided to accompany them in order to study the Hive, as well as analyze the power of each of the Guardians of Fireteam Horus up-close. The battle with The Taken King, however, had shown some of the Warlock's greatest feats, throwing grenades with such power, they were originally mistaken for Nova Bombs. The Exo used his Ghost to steal the mysterious relic, from the Taken King's Throne Room, and used to against the Hive God, and his two daughters; however, exposure to Oryx's Taken Energy corrupted his Ghost physically, altering its body and voice. After witnessing the final death of his two Fireteam members, Wraith's fury manifested in what Sera described as "The flames of Hell, itself," as the Warlock covered the entirety of the Throne Room with a burning Void Flame which utterly erased all opposition, while simultaneously leaving his fellow Guardians unscathed. After analyzing the Ogres who had killed his friends, Wraith was able to rip the Blighted Light from their bodies, and do what no other being had ever done before: Reclaim something which Oryx had Taken. Wraith used the light of his dead friends to conjure a Nova Lance capable of destroying Oryx, sending the Hive God's empty husk of a body down to the gas giant, below. the Battle with the Taken King had rattled the Guardian, but after some time, he regained his composure. He now aids Fireteam Horus wherever they may need him, and continues to lead the four of them as the last remaining members of the Dead Militia.

  • Don't sell yourself short so soon. It just takes some practice. I find that it helps to looks to specific sources, for inspiration. Replaying the beginning mission, and seeing how destroyed the Tower was, is what gave me my inspiration for this first part. Alternatively, other things such as music or simple daydreaming and imaginative thinking can help. Don't limit yourself simply to what you see in the game. Realistically, nobody can fire off thirty-nine Golden Gun rounds like that. In one of my other stories, I had a Bladedancer and Striker go toe-to-toe with their respective Supers: The Titan charged the arc lightning into his arms, to act as armor to block the blade, and to also amplify his punching force. The Bladedancer took a punch full-force, but cancelled out the Arc Lightning because her Ghost tuned the wavelength of her own Arc Lightning to match the Titan's -thus cancelling them out. Use whatever gets your creativity going, and once you've made it, re-read it and look for anything that you want to improve or clarify.
