•
It's used to distinguish the rarity of each armor piece/gun
How so? I don't mean the blue/purple/yellow background colors. I mean the actual item it shows. ie: High minded complex warlock armor. The gloves look red, the robes look white, and the helmet is another color (i forget) In Destiny 1, the thumbnail previews for individual sets all looked the same/uniform.

 • Have you made sure the items don't have shaders on them? Example: Rare Titan armor the RPC Valiant is yellow default. Can drop from anything. But depending on where it drops it may have a planet specific shader automatically equipped on it. So it'll be green or brown from the EDZ, blue if it drops on Titan, red from Nessus, and a different yellow shade if it drops on IO. You can remove the shaders they come with to regain the default looks for uniformity.

 • Oh yea I definitely know about the generic shaders. I'm talking about the icons themselves, like when you press start to open up your character's gear screen. The little thumbnail previews for each piece are different colors, even if they're in the same set.

 • I thought about this too and I really think it's to make the base armor very unattractive. Think about it, if the armor is ugly what will you do to correct it, use shaders. Coincidentally shaders are one time use. So what do you do when you run out? Visit Tess of course because good ole Bungo realize no one really wants to grind for shaders. The people annoyed by the appearance will end up breaking down and buying a pack of shaders. For people like me I'll just walk around looking like a homeless guardian.

 • Oh I can't answer that, I think it might be because how the colors interact with the background color
