Crucible Matchmaking as a Primarily Solo Player in D2

First off, I love everything that I'm seeing in the beta so far. The balance changes for Crucible are very welcome. Longer cooldowns, less ability spam, more emphasis on teamwork and gunplay, and far fewer cheap OHK's are everything that I was hoping to see changed for Destiny 2. I know there are myriad complaints regarding these things, mostly saying that these changes have removed a lot of what made Destiny what it was. I think Bungie could have done a better job communicating how gear available in the release will address a lot of these complaints, but at the same time I think quite a bit of the negative feedback is due to a lot of the crutches that people leaned on being removed. Too bad, so bad. :P All of that said, as a primarily solo player (and when I do group up it's usually with only 1 other person), I have to say that I see a huge area of potential improvement for Crucible matchmaking that Bungie is currently overlooking. My experience in the Crucible, and I'm sure that of many like me, would be VASTLY improved if matchmaking in Destiny 2, ESPECIALLY FOR THE COMPETITIVE QUEUE, were adjusted to focus on pairing up groups of players against each other, rather than the very common scenario that I've seen so far in the beta where groups of 4 get matched against a team of 4 solo players. Bungie has a good relationship with Blizzard, makers of Overwatch, and their Ranked queue does exactly this; vastly favors attempting to balance opposing teams by placing grouped players against equally sized groups. Yes, this lengthens queue times, but improves overall experience by making the most competitive offering of gameplay as equal and balanced as possible. And that is what competition should be; balancing the field as much as possible such that the main determining factor of outcome is skill. Throughout all of Destiny, and now during the beta for Destiny 2, I've felt that Bungie's focus on the social aspect of Destiny has been punishing of the solo player, particularly for Crucible. I understand that is their vision for the game, and I respect that, but I don't feel that it should come at the expense of the quality of experience for those of us who don't always run with a group of friends. Now is the opportunity to fix that dynamic within the most competitive aspect of Destiny; the Crucible. Bungie, please leverage your working relationship with Blizzard and ask for a guiding hand in adjusting Crucible matchmaking to mimic that of the Ranked queue in Overwatch: to match teams based not only on your internal Matchmaking Rating, but also on player group size. If it is Bungie's desire for Destiny 2 to be as competitive as possible, this change would only serve to enhance that vision. Thank you for consideration of my feedback.

  • Bump. To note, this is also a topic of discussion on the Destiny reddit. There are many out there whose experiences in Destiny 2 would be enhanced by balanced matchmaking based on group size, similar to what happens in Overwatch's ranked queue. Please consider. Thanks.
