The Echo Saga || "Errands" #9 || No Rest For The Weary

ERRANDS The sounds of gunshots could be heard, echoing through the night. Echo arrived at the tent, was about to enter, but then stumbled upon Avesk running outside. He stepped aside, and let the Hunter make his way out. A little bit later, Alzer joined them as well. He reloaded his auto rifle, which looked very Hive-ish, and said: "Alzer enters the fray. Now what is going on?" "We're being attacked by a Wolf Pack. Shouldn't be too much of a problem" As they were running towards the fight, Alzer's gun caught Echo's attention. "Where did you get that? Ancient Brazil? It doesn't look like it" The other Warlock laughed. "Not everything I have comes from Brazil, Echo. I found this gun in a Hive Temple at Mare Imbrium. It's called Necrochasm" Avesk looked sceptically. "You do realize that Mare Imbrium is a forbidden zone now? After the Great Disaster, the Vanguard locked it down. There's a reason for that, you know" "There are always exceptions. Look at us, at Echo! We're also in a forbidden zone" "Indeed", Echo mumbled. Avesk just grumbled a bit, as they continued to run towards the ongoing battle. The trio got over the dune, and could finally see Validus. The large Titan was slowly walking forward, firing his shotgun into the charging Fallen. The recoil of the heavy weapon didn't seem to affect Validus, as he held the shotgun firmly in his hands. Echo could only marvel at the man's strength. However, as he pushed forward, plowing through the Fallen, their weapons having no effect on his Titan armor, Validus was inevitably getting surrounded, and a Stealth Vandal was sneaking up from behind. Luckily, Avesk noticed, and the Hunter crouched down on his knees, pulling out a green sniper rifle. Less than a second later, the body fell on the ground, Ether erupting from it's armor. Avesk then proceeded to take down a few more Vandals, with merciless precision. Suddenly, Echo noticed that he had been standing there for a few minutes now, looking at the battlefield. Alzer had already descended and was supporting Validus. His alien auto rifle unleashed a neverending stream of bullets, and Echo was certain that everytime an enemy got killed, the green flames surrounding the weapon's bony hull increased a little bit in size. Echo realized that he was still just standing there, and quickly readied his weapon, before anyone of the Guardians would notice would notice. He threw a Scatter Grenade into the mob, taking out some Dregs, who had followed the first wave of Vandals. He then aimed down his sights, and started holding down the trigger, and the Bad Juju spread death once again. A small pack of Wolves wasn't really a fair match against four well-trained Guardians, and soon enough, the Fallen were retreating. Even the few survivors didn't escape, as Alzer mercilessly shot them down, each victim exploding like a Cursed Thrall upon death. Avesk came sliding down the dune, a clear sign that the battle was truly over. "I wonder why we didn't notice their Skiffs landing, those de-cloaking devices make a lot of sound" Validus just finished scavenging some House Banners from a dead Captain, and turned towards Echo. "Because they didn't come by Skiff. Our sensors would've picked them up miles from here" Avesk started cleaning his sniper rifle, and said: "I don't know, Val. We shouldn't trust our scanners too much, I you'd ask me" Finally, Alzer returned from his chase. "There are some Pikes, about a hundred meters further. Unfortunately, I let some of the Dregs guarding them escape" "They'll probably warn the rest. We need to move out. Alzer, Avesk, break up the encampment and transmat the Sparrows. I want to be out of here within 15 minutes" Validus was showing his talent for commanding, and the two other members of his Fireteam seemed to recognize the Titan's authority. Walking towards their tents, they left Echo and Validus standing there. Validus was about head off and help the others, but then Echo stopped him. "We won't be able to transmat anything down here. Unless we let the ships enter orbit, nothing will move from or the surface. No Sparrows, no tents, no Guardians. Absolutely nothing" Validus mumbled some instructions, and as Echo couldn't hear them, he assumed they were broadcasted via Fireteam Ashen's local channel. After a while, Validus stopped talking, and he said, once more with a commanding voice: "We are going to investigate the Pikes which were left behind" "Was about to suggest that", Echo muttered, before following the other Guardian. They found the Pikes, and were waiting for the others while they watched the carnage Alzer had left behind. Fallen corpses, scattered left and right, scorched by the explosions caused by Alzer's weapon. Echo almost felt sorry for the Fallen. Soon enough, Echo noticed the other two Guardians arriving, Avesk waving at Echo. "We've thrown the tents on a big pile, along with the monitors, just as you ordered, Val" "That is NOT what I asked, Avesk. I wanted you to make sure the equipment could be easily transmatted once the atmosphere clears out" Avesk shrugged. "Well, at least my ship's AI is smart enough to transmat things when they aren't arranged in perfect lines and columns" Validus ignored him, and instead mounted one of the Pikes. "The Wolves are coming and-" As if ordered to, a distant roar could be heard. "-and the next group won't be as small as this one. As I told you already, our Sparrows won't transmat, so grab a Pike, and we can get out of here. " That last order wasn't really necessary, as everyone had already claimed one, and were warming up their Pike's engines. The first one to accelerate was Avesk, followed by Alzer. Echo and Validus waited a few seconds, and the dust was already settling, but then Echo rammed down the 'throttle' handles, and rocketed forward, Validus on his tail. Within half a minute, they had reached top speed and were cruising through the desert. The sun was already coming up, and they passed Firebase Chora. Surprisingly, the fighting wasn't over yet, and the Cabal were holding out against the Vex onslaught. Echo noticed that only the elite troops were still alive, mostly Blind Legion. Validus, who had been leading the group, waved his hand towards Echo, and then pointed next to him. Echo understood that Validus wanted him next to him, and he drove towards the Titan. "That was supposed to be our resting point!" Validus was shouting, trying to talk over the sound of the extremely noisy Pikes. "I noticed that, thank you! I have been trying to get in touch with other Guardians, and I had connection for a few seconds. If we keep driving at this speed, we'll reach the Augusta Chasm by nightfall. We'll meet Fireteam Nemesis there!" Validus nodded, and started talking in his Fireteam voice chat once again.
