If you opened the chest at reset, or after reset, you won't get anything. Same happens if you get into the tower before reset, but try to get to Xur at, or after reset. He will be gone. I understand your dissapointment, but that's how it is, unfortunately. I've beaten a NF a few mins after reset, but got nothing for it, even though I was on the boss fight during reset.
