Halo 2 Vista Map Editor

Hey can anyone tell the basics of the Halo 2 Map Editor and how to start a new map from scratch. I don't have much experience with map editors so I really don't know what to do with the Halo 2 Vista Map Editor. The only map editor I've ever used was Forge in Halo 3. But I know that's way different than a real map editor. Anyways, I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get started with a blank map made from scratch and how to play objects and scenery on that blank map. Thanks for your time!

 •
Posted by: General Heed I just wish there was someone to use that Headhunter or Race gametype in Halo 2 Vista. It would be an awesome discovery! Playing Headhunter before Halo: Reach comes out.
lol, I wish Bungie never took the coding out of H2X, because then HiredGoons would have left it in too. xD Headhunter was also taken out in Halo 3, and involved collecting "heads"...

 •
Posted by: General Heed Yeah... There's nothing simple about the map editor, fully featured or not. I'm almost done my very first map by the way. Just have a few more things to fix in 3DS before I export it to the map editor. You know, the Halo 2 Vista trailer made the map editor look so simple. Based on the trailer, it seems like you could build a whole new map with only a few clicks...
Yeah, we were promised a map editor better than HEK and maybe HEK+, but then they gutted it, and ripped away all campaign and most multiplayer assets. You can hardly compile custom, I have proof that H2V is built to refuse certain custom tags, so my way around that was adding pre-built slots into the mainmenu.map It worked, Kills Alone made custom vehi tags (not complete), if H2V was built to refuse adding custom map list support for maps with these custom tags, then you can see how selfish Microsoft is. (someone should sue them and Bungie for lying) I just wish I had H2V at the beginning. ='( List of tags in custom maps which are refused and never added in H2V's custom map list Weapons (added ones that is) Vehicles Biped Characters (AI characters) ...I can't think of more, and that's because I will never become a professional Halo modder, or programmer. Also we have a limit of 50 custom maps probably defined by the .exe, the mainmenu.map also has 50 slots, but modders can make this higher >1000 to any number they want, but as of yet there's no program to do this. If you need help I'm always at the monstrmoose.com site. just post in the map making section once you register and put a help thread etc etc. making a map is really simple, its just that those who freaking ported the darn game and made a map editor for it, freaking GUTTED the editor and if you look at the official video for the editor, you will see that like half the things in the video are non-existent in the editor given to us via the h2v disk.....
Why would they remove all those things out of the map editor? Wasn't Halo 2 Vista supposed to set an example for all future Games For Windows Live games? Halo 2 Vista was supposed to take full advantage of Games For Windows Live. It even included Tray and Play. I don't see why they would've removed all that stuff from the map editor. Halo 2 Vista had so much potential.

Although since I'm trying to make a custom map in Halo 2, I technically could be considered a modder. But I prefer to be called a glitcher since I enjoy glitches in Halo rather than mods.

 •
Posted by: XHN_SCRAPY Ok, first in order for it to work properly, you need to make sure you have the shaders named right on the materials in 3ds, and then you also need a sky part named +sky (that may be why it wont load into sapien) but also, Find the UNLOCKED Hek for h2v as hek for halo ce is for ce etc and not for H2V. if you go to the monstrmoose site you'll find more help there and stuffs... trust me just grab the unlocked ver of H2V editor kit as the one given to us via the dvd is pretty much worthless...Not joking.. But glad to see there are some more map makers out there aside from the few i knowz and including my self lol... (but i have only contibuted so far a port of H1's wizard and soon a new custom map H2MT S3WAGE PLANT "the 3 is in there because LIVE does not allow the word Sewage as a map name...) lol so good luck and hope to see ya around Scrapy
ok thanks.

 • If the H2V Map editor is too restrictive, get this. It is the CE HEK and is way better then the h2v editor. Even better, you can use gmax! :D

 • Interesting topic. I asked Kornman00 about race and headhunter...
Posted by: Shock120 Do the gametype globals for Headhunter and Race still exist?

Posted by: Kornman00 The engine code for both of those doesn't exist in any of the shipping games (Xbox and Vista) IIRC. There may be tag definitions for them but if the code isn't there to use those definitions, it's all meaningless.
So, there's no point making anything for these gametypes, since the gametype itself is gone. There are references of Headhunter in Halo 3, and references to Theater mode in Halo 1 and Halo 2 Xbox/Vista. I could have benefited if they released Halo 2 Guerilla Radio, I already have ideas of what to make on it, but we will never know if they will release, they never said "never", but that leaves the question of when? (and how many halo games have to pass them by until they release) ='( As for the silenced SMGs a H2V developer decided to bring them back, but the idiot broke the laser pointers on them, so he left a place holder for them, halomaps.org has the fixed versions. That reminds, I'm not sure if any of you here would know about, but while looking through Sapien, I found references to a gametype called Headhunter in Halo 2 Vista. Headhunter is a gametype in Halo: Reach but that reference got me wondering if it was possible that there is a headhunter gametype hidden in Halo 2 Vista, much like the Silenced SMG's. Here's a screenshot I took to prove it: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100702234305/halo/images/2/2e/Halo2VistaHeadhuntergametype.jpg [Edited on 08.03.2010 7:18 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: JacobGRocks GMAX does not work with h2v. You need 3ds max. Also, I couldn't find 3ds Max through eBay used, only howto books.
I found a link to the demo of version 8 on the halo2vistamaps.org website. At least I think it was that website. I've already installed the trial and so far everything seems to be working perfectly. Now I have 30 days to complete my map. The process is a lot more complicated that I thought. I'm barely 10% through. The map I'm trying to make is a large city map with several tall skyscrapers. I've tried to export the map without any texturing or any other stuff like that. It seems when I load that into Halo 2 Sapien, there's too many errors and the file is considered corrupt. I guess that's because I didn't add any texturing but if that's not the reason why, then please let me know if I'm doing something wrong. Thanks!

 • ok well, head over to monstrmoose.com for help and also, other 3D programs are not compatible (yes they can make .obj etc, but not a .ass file) with the h2v .Ass converter plug-in only FOR 3dsmax and the other programs will not be able to use it either. You would have to find someone to do it for you on their computer using 3dsmax. Then also i have found older 3dsmax for like $180.00 it just depends on where you are looking.....

Obviously I can't ask for links to those methods in this forum nor would I want to. Purchasing legal software has its benefits.
