I hope Destiny 2 is a little more "open world"

I took this screenshot, and it has me thinking. Zelda has the "If you see it, you can go there." motto, I don't want D2 to be like that, I just want patrols to be more fulfilling than just doing bounties and public events. Bungie did an amazing job with the landscape and draw distances, it's a shame we don't get to fully explore them. Destiny is a shared world shooter/MMO hybrid, whatever, but it's so limited. They dropped last gen, so there's more power to do more in the game, I just hope they put it to good use. The way D1 is ending is how I think D2 should begin, with more openness. I can't express that enough. Even with all the nerfs, complaints, exclusive content, etc. Destiny at its core is a great game. Bungie is a talented developer and they nailed the mechanics and gunplay to a T. I hope they don't scrap what they've built and ruined the formula. I don't care what platform people play on, we're all part of the Destiny community and as a community need to push Bungie to make D2 the best it can be. Destiny, as it is now, is because we as a community asked for it, and Bungie listened. They delivered albeit bad timing. I honestly think Age of Triumph is a great send off to Destiny 1. I hope Bungie takes that and makes it the heart of Destiny 2, with an actual story of course. Some people won't agree with me and that's fine, we're all entitled to our own opinions. EDIT: Surprisingly everybody agrees with this thread. I know Destiny 2 is practically finished, but a game like this would be so much more immersive. Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone. EDIT: Almost 300 upvotes and 200 comments. I don't care about trending, but it's nice to see a positive thread be on top for a change. Thank you to everyone who kept console wars out of the discussion. Thank you for being civil and proving that the community isn't full of salt.

      • Along with the stuff I want fixed in the game I Just hope the community at least in these forums, grows up and becomes a little more respectable/mature, instead of acting like autistic 13 year olds when they get killed by a weapon they don't use. Sadly though I don't expect much.

        • I thought about this yesterday while helping someone on a low level character do a mission that was on the outside of the wall. I ran to a cliff upon exiting the barrier that made the Cosmodrome so... thin. I looked over the edge, staring at the road, trees and landscape. As this low level I agreed to protect got slaughtered by the fallen, I just stood there pondering. Looking over the edge kind of made me realize why Destiny doesn't feel like, well... Destiny. It was always believed that you would be a guardian exploring the frontier. Seeing all that open land, even just from a single angle, actually made me feel like Destiny was what I thought it would be. Sadly though, good things never last. It'd be amazing if they made patrols bigger. Anyways, I couldn't stay for long... had to go teabag that dead guy.

It is leaked by GameStop: German Branch that it will be larger and more "open world."

          • The way I see it is bigger patrols = more interesting and diverse story content. How often in the current Destiny have we done missions or even dlc missions where we trek back into the same areas we've gone to numerous times before.

            • i've almost totally made up in my mind i won't be buying D2 BUT, I agree i'd like a more open world structure if I were to buy it. That picture is a perfect representation of something I'd expect. my fireteam should be able to "see it and go to it" and believe it or not bungie said D1 would be like that. They had a video saying something to the effect of "you see all this land, it isn't just a static background. you can go to anything you see." low and behold they were lying big time. that picture with tons of hidden areas and things to do and collect and fight with much better public events would be the ideal new game space. from the top of those mountains down to under the mist on the right. like zelda and the witcher and dragons dogma i would need d2 to have massive expansive open worlds. leave the "zones" for larger patches of land if they still need to make sure only 8 - 20 players fit in one space but still allow us to travel anywhere and give the players more options for travel other than sparrows.

                  • Many ask for open world. The problem with the concept of open world is that is that it isn't interesting or exciting in and of itself. If destiny currently is open world without more actual content to fill it, who really cares? So you have more beacons and spawns for public events? So what? Oh, I can go to that point over there? Great, the real question is what can I do when I get there. If the answer is more of the same then open world is completely, utterly and in every way unnecessary. Open world is just a tool to deliver the content of a game. Personally if the game is great then it is great whether it is open world or not. Open world games can just as easily be repetitive and boring.

                      • The AI needs to stop acting like zombies and think for themselves. The AI has always been too predictable, which becomes boring fast. Love your ideas though. I always loved patrol, but everything seemed too repetitive as a whole. Go here, do that, all done. Would love more progressive updates that slightly tweak the world every month, even if it is minor, just to make things interesting.

                        • If they do that though, then it would by more difficult to fit more players into it, and you could go exploring or do activities and never see anyone else. I think it should stay about the same as D1 but populate areas with more players, let you take in a fireteam of six and have there be more activities to do and more ways to interact and do things with other players.

                          • Open world is okay when it is done right. If Destiny 2 goes complete open world there is a lot to change in the game. Overall Patrols are only boring cause there's nothing to do in them. What patrol should be is going to spots you haven't gone to via the directory. There should also be vendors on patrol and so forth. I don't care if Destiny 2 has open world, I just want MORE. Not the same boring ass old vendors in my hub spaces, I want to be more in tune with the actual world.

                            • If Destiny 2 has better patrols, day one buy. Good patrolling options can be a great way to extend a game's longevity. Take the moon for example, BEAUTIFUL enviroment, great lore, but nothing to do.

It's going to be more of the same. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. If they were willing to risk everything to make the revision what it was, with how easily they cashed in, they aren't going to change. Face it. It's going to be similar to how CoD deals with their franchise. You'll all be pre-ordering for pointless crap and be paying for the micro transactions in no time.

                                • I expect it to be what they envisioned destiny 1 to be before it all went to pot. Rumours have said one patrol area in d2 will be bigger than all of d1 patrols combined. We shall have to wait and see.
