I hope Destiny 2 is a little more "open world"

I took this screenshot, and it has me thinking. Zelda has the "If you see it, you can go there." motto, I don't want D2 to be like that, I just want patrols to be more fulfilling than just doing bounties and public events. Bungie did an amazing job with the landscape and draw distances, it's a shame we don't get to fully explore them. Destiny is a shared world shooter/MMO hybrid, whatever, but it's so limited. They dropped last gen, so there's more power to do more in the game, I just hope they put it to good use. The way D1 is ending is how I think D2 should begin, with more openness. I can't express that enough. Even with all the nerfs, complaints, exclusive content, etc. Destiny at its core is a great game. Bungie is a talented developer and they nailed the mechanics and gunplay to a T. I hope they don't scrap what they've built and ruined the formula. I don't care what platform people play on, we're all part of the Destiny community and as a community need to push Bungie to make D2 the best it can be. Destiny, as it is now, is because we as a community asked for it, and Bungie listened. They delivered albeit bad timing. I honestly think Age of Triumph is a great send off to Destiny 1. I hope Bungie takes that and makes it the heart of Destiny 2, with an actual story of course. Some people won't agree with me and that's fine, we're all entitled to our own opinions. EDIT: Surprisingly everybody agrees with this thread. I know Destiny 2 is practically finished, but a game like this would be so much more immersive. Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone. EDIT: Almost 300 upvotes and 200 comments. I don't care about trending, but it's nice to see a positive thread be on top for a change. Thank you to everyone who kept console wars out of the discussion. Thank you for being civil and proving that the community isn't full of salt.

    • Pointless to waste time on this when people barely go patrolling. After the first oh this is cool effect goes over you'll barely go there and could care it's in the game

Don't know why but I kinda hope they allow you to make your on shader. Also if they keep the classes aka Titan, hunter, warlock. Then I would like to see the warlock have a support subclass. But idk.

        • 2 will have lots of good changes, bungie is listening, either good or bad they are constantly making changes the community wishes for and some they don't. They don't have the constraints of older consoles holding them back and also the whole project didn't get scrapped just before release so they have had plenty of time to learn and tweak from their mistakes. It's my hope that Destiny2 has all the makings and more of what made me love this franchise and get so addicted to it! The only thing I fear is usually the sequel is never as good as the original, let's keep our fingers crossed that it's everything we hoped for!

        • Imagine looking at a 3D overview of a planet. On this model, there are a few points designated as "safe" landing zones. There are only a few of these at first, maybe even just one for your first visit with more becoming available as you proceed through missions. You'll also be able to set up beacons as you explore to designate new landing zones for yourself and your friends, but these may not be "safe" and could land you in the middle of a firefight if not right into an ambush by reinforced enemies that discover the beacon's location. When you first land, you have a blank map with some topography and a few mission critical locations marked for reference. Normally, you can approach these in any order you wish unless an order is critical to your current story missions. These are vast distances from one another, and are far from the only significant locations in any explorable section of a planet. These other locations are not unlocked by proximity, but must be activity marked by players on their personal maps as they discover them. This leaves them to decide which areas are really important and prevents map clutter. As you travel, you'll run across other players. These players are able to interact with you by proximity chat and by sharing the locations they feel are important on their personal maps while giving hints about places you should explore or avoid. As you traverse the surface, you'll come across entrances to cave systems, buried cities and buildings that can have you enter at the top floors for you work your way down, fully explorable ghost towns, crashed capital ships and long abandoned battlefields, enemy staging and supply areas, friendly supply, recon, and observation posts, and constantly changing areas of enemy patrols and concentrations. This is the premise that I'd like to see in destiny 2. If we're truely fighting to take back ground that we lost so long ago, then our first steps will be into the unknown and we won't have a foothold until we establish one.

          • D2 will be CoD aka Call of Destiny. 75% Crucible, 15% stupid Patrol, 10% "story" and 5% raid. I will pass on that one. VoG was great and I will play the shit out of AoT, but then it's over.

                  • If you want true open world games come to PC. Consoles can't handle amazing open world games at over 60fps 1080p. The new ones might but not those the majority of people have. Destiny true open world would be amazing but consoles are holding back to what a remarkable game destiny could be with its lore and possibilities. Remember when current gen players claimed old gen where holding destiny back?? Yea same goes for PC we claim consoles are holding back games like destiny from becoming its true potential.

                    • I think it's funny how hard we have gone to try and break this game. From time to time over the last 3 years I have become bored and tried to expand the boundaries of the play space. Sparrow glitching was a passion for a while. Man I got to some interesting places. Open world - we'd still try to get off the map - think it's just human nature wanting to explore.

                    • Honestly i would love a more open world destiny with the strikes being like these giant dungeon doors (kinda like that one mars mission that has a circular teleporter and teleports you to the black garden but instead of teleporting maybe have a path or have us hunt down people like in the patrols now and by killing them we get sets of keys that allow us to open the doors and hunt the captain down... i dunno

                      • A deeper main story, more touching/epic moments, serious-yet entertaining dialogue (a dialogue before Raid is what missing here), more interactions with everything sorrounds you and memorable cutscenes is what i'm looking forward in Destiny 2..

                      • I kinda want it to adhere to the Zelda motto in a degree. Like how the patrol card talks of discovery and so much more. That's what I want.

                      • I agree with everything you said. If you do patrol on earth and most other planets, if you look into he distance it's actually other playable areas. The only gripe I have is that patrols are on a linear path. I just don't see them making each patrol area open would like fall out for instance, it would cost way too much to make multiple maps like that. The linear path on patrols is here to stay unless they incorporate a random map generator each time you land on a planet. In the end I don't see that happening either. Games like no man sky and war frame are cool because they have that aspect but they are the same worlds with random changes. That's appealing but if that's what I wanted, I'd be playing war frame all the time. I think they could do one huge open world but then again it would be on planet to go and each dlc would probably be another planet. I just can't wait to see what they expand on from his game, like you I hope they stick to the core of what they have.

                        • Good post and I wholeheartedly agree. If Bungie could just manage to make an open world similar to Horizon Zero Dawn ( and they weren't a million miles away with D1) aswell as the Gunplay mechanics we all know and love, then I for one would be a very happy Guardian.
