Little did the Vanguard know, he was out surviving on his own in the wild, without his ghost to resurrect him whenever he fell. He became more cautious, more paranoid, more terrified of death. And without his ghost to act as the valve on his supply of light, he was unable to use his abilities without risking his life. While he survived on his own for the most part, he was not without traveling companions along the way- he befriended a wayward ghost and a sabre cat during his time in the wild but spent most of his time running from and hunting the Fallen house of Kings, who had been out for his head since he nearly murdered their Kell at Twilight Gap. Because of the danger the Fallen posed to him, he refused to take the threat with him to the City and sentenced himself to seclusion until a time where it wouldn’t be as dangerous for him to return. After about five years of recovering and honing his survival skills, Nik had an idea- he started to spend his time scavenging for materials to piece together a ship that would allow him to break orbit. It took him years to be able to achieve this on his own, with what little knowledge he had gathered from the shipwrights over the years, but when he finally got one working Nik set out for the Reef, to ask the Queen for help. It was his theory that, because the Void had called to him all of his life, the Awoken would be able to help him connect to it, to help him wield his light as a Nightstalker. The Queen agreed to help, on the condition that he would swear his allegiance to her, and so he did, and fought out the duration of the Reef Wars, all the way through the end of the Taken War, in the name of Mara Sov. But he never forgot his loyalty to the Vanguard or the city- Nik used his new fount of information to leave breadcrumb trails for his former Fireteam members under the guise of an anonymous informant by the name of “Spectre”, to protect the city, and to slyly let the keen know he was still alive and fighting the good fight.
