After 3 years of searching, we Elite Dangerous players have finally made contact with the Thargoids. They have been in each Elite game (Dangerous is Elite 4) but, as far as I know, they don't do much more than this. Frontier (FDev) has confirmed they silently patched this in and waited for a player to discover it. The video I linked is not the first recorded sighting (an AI pirate dropped in and ended up ruining the immersion of that one) but this was a very good video of the whole thing.
