I have heard that the MC's realy name (John 117) was linked to a bible verse in some way. I researched this and here's what I found:
John 1:17
-For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
This verse refers to the old testament when God gave the ten commandments to Moses on Mt. Sinai, as well as the new testament when Jesus preached about the Lord.
John 11:7
-Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."
This verse refers to when Jesus and his apostles (more commonly known as his deciples) were called to Bethany because his close friend (Lazarus) was on his deathbed, yet Jesus did not go because he knew that Lazarus would be risen from the dead.
Here are the next lines in the verse. I think they could possibly resemble something about the Master Chief's great bravery, but I don't know:
-Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."
"But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?"
Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light. It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light."
Speculation anyone?

Here are my speculations, halo, used to control the "flood" The ark, the only safe place from the flood to control the halos maybe the whole noahs ark thing was miss interpreted and the "Ark" was not a boat in water, but a structure/Sancuary from the parasite. The "flood" are probably the "cleansers" of the galaxy, the only things that have the capability to wipe out thousands of species by overunning them. John, Spartan number 117 someone brought this up at Halo.Bungie.org and made a very good point from the bible that said somthing like "John, witness to light" Tartarus, hell, oblivion. The meanest sum-blam!-' from halo Truth- a lying, manipulative cheat who had the entire covenant beleiving in his false religion. Mercy- an old, mean prophet that obviously did not shed any mercy to the commander when he became the arbiter Regret- it seemed he didnt regret much when the chief beat him out of his chair. i cant think of anything else but those are just some thoughts...

mc is no angel and the prophets aren't satan
-
what are you thinking the names are all made up in halo nothing in it is religous at all except maybe the music.
-
it is. just think of the number of halos in the game and ull find that it is a bible number. also about the oracle and the end of the world...?

The edit button also works, too.
Go back to Earth? Halo has also been correlated to Greko-Roman mythology.
Like you said Bungie does use many names from Ancient Greko-Roman history. For example Marathon (Old Bungie Project) was where the Greeks defeated the Persians in the 1st Persian Invasion. Secondly, the Spartans were an acient Greek people as most of you already know. So where could 117 fit into Greek History? As it turns out 117 was number of square miles of Ancient Athens. I know it's obscure but, hey. And lasty in the movie "Demoltion Man" the main characters name happens to be John Spartan, could mean nothing but still.. [Edited on 10/27/2005]

Jesus 083

Or John was picked because it's a plan, common name. The idea being that his name doesn't matter, because he's known as Master Chief? But due to all the Biblical references, the discussed idea is more likely.
-
I also have thought that. You should also try first John 17. I can't really remember what it says but its another verse. But if it is linked to the bible, thats pretty cool. Bungie had to do some research on that.
-
definatly not, I am sorry you guys are taking it too far...
-
I think Bungie draws inspiration from Biblical names and events, but I wouldn't draw a direct correlation/relationship. It does seem that all the random, post-Halo speculation makes (too much) sense, but who really knows except for those on the inside? John-117 is definitely a Christianity-inspired character. I mean, he's the savior, for goodness's sake! (I think when MC takes his helmet off in Halo 3, he'll be sporting a full-on JC beard.) lol.
-
Just don't relate a game to the HOLY BIBLE
-
Look, this isn't something new. their have been plenty of these discussions man. I have concluded that YES, he is linked.
Posted by: stargaiden does this mean that the people that work at bungie are religous fanatics?
No not exactly, life does not always imitate art. I think it means they like to link their games to things that people can connect with. I think that the Halo experence is much better becuase its fun to find all the little things that are put in the games that have to deal with religion and things like that. It really makes you look at the game and think, not just play.

OMG THE TRUTH GUY IS SATAN AND MC IS THE ARCH ANGEL OMG! stupid thoughts lol

Know anything offhand, monk?
-
Yeah there's all sorts of stuff about the "covenant" in the bible that kinda relates
-
Oh yeah there's tons of logical stuff on that page. Like how the name of the city John grew up in is the same as the city that Greek gods went to in the afterlife, as well as the whole "Spartan" being the name of the project. Bungie probably knows a lot of stuff about mythology offhand, too, since they made the game Myth. But regardless: thanks for making us think, Bungie.
-
I cant link it but just c/p it and theres some crazy bible stuff like freak-eh stuff.
-
Yeah me too, I love it when games make you think. EDIT:// Thanks for the link! [Edited on 10/26/2005]
