I've been using strange coins every weekend to buy half a dozen or so of what evers on offer from xur, and then disassemble for shards. 13 coins for a helmut, boots, etc - is the cheapest way to get an exotic short of using glimmer for the one or two exotic weapons you can buy without needing a shard. After a few weeks - 20 or 30 shards in the vault. I can usually gain a 100 coins a week grinding through crucible so its just a matter of remembering to visit xur on the weekends.

Cheapest way is A) Get an exotic shard somehow B) Get a heavy weapon telemetry, and use it C) Go to the Kiosk D) Buy a heavy weapon exotic, for 1 shard, and equip it E) Use 6 motes of light F) Destroy the exotic G) Get 2 shards back, and some motes and things. Profit! H) Repeat steps D->H until you've used up all your glimmer or motes Sure, you say "short of using glimmer" but glimmer is easy to earn in this game -- much easier than earning umpteen strange coins

I've never had a problem earning coins (At times getting rid of them is more the issue). Plus I find the whole "get 1 shard, buy exotic, infuse, disassemble, get two shards" process a bit laborious. I'd rather buy half a dozen helmuts from xur and get half a dozen shards all at once, especially if the vault is stacked with coins - and i get to keep my motes and glimmer for other stuff. But to each their own. Its an alternative if you've got stacks of coins. All good.
