This has been building for years, and game companies didn't think it was serious.

Going back to silent protagonists or even text boxes could be interesting.
-
Silent protagonists it is then..

The amount of ignorance in this thread is kind of sad honestly. They are freelancers first of all. Freelancing means that work isn't always steady, especially in a very competitive field. Sure they may make $800 for a four hour session, but it's not like everyone of them is working every day, or even every week. There are droughts where work is hard to come by in any freelance career. Asking for more money really isn't that crazy of an idea. A very similar field would be studio musicians, and they make quite a bit more. A harmony vocalist makes in the ballpark of $375 per song, which usually takes an hour at most, more often than not a pro studio musician can knock out their track in the first or second take, which equates to about 20 minutes.
-
The only big names they're striking against are EA, Disney, and I think I saw Insomniac in there. I don't get why people act like this is the end of voice acting.
-
More like Film Actors Guild
touch me bby
Yea I feel like like the SAG is being just a lot a bit greedy here. There's no way doing video games is any harder on the vocal chords than any other kind of voice acting, so throw that bullshit right out the window. And I feel like $825 for a four hour session is pretty -blam!-ing fair. They studios even offered to go up another 9% that would have been around $900 per 4 hour session. And I'm sorry but the voice actors don't deserve residuals. I'll dig into it more, but right now I'm not seeing anything that convinces me the SAG people have been wronged. How about those devs that put in 80 hour weeks, or those programmers that do the same? I guarantee you the majority of them aren't making $825 every 4 hours they put in.
-
They can pay me 825 for four hours lol. I'll be a scab
-
I'm not going to listen to or care about bitching from anyone who makes 200$ an hour.

If you were to record a 4 hour section each day, you would get about 300k a year. Sounds fair enough IMO
-
We need new voice actors. I'm sick of hearing the same people in every game I play. Hopefully they hire some college kids or something.
-
Wow, lots of hate on voice acting. I'd really recommend reading some things written by voice talent who have gone through shiatty marathon sessions before letting the vitriol loose. Read Wil Wheaton's posts on the issue, then follow his links to other people. Or, you know, just keep throwing comments out there that are based in minimal knowledge, ignorance, and a misplaced projection of entitlement.
-
I would be fine if voiced lines were taken out of games, I've never had a problem with reading dialogue boxes.
-
I really don't give a shit. -blam!- give me half of what you give them and ill do it.... voice actor....shut up
-
It looks like both sides have a valid claim. Voice actors are expected to push their talents to the limits for what's basically a side job at the risk of damaging themselves, but their contribution to the actual project of developing a game is so minor that I can understand why publishers pay them so little. The assertion that it's a "war on the middle class" is preposterous, that's what preorders and microtransactions are for
-
Hope it goes well, they deserve the bonus and transparency.
-
Sweet, we can remove the protagonist from fo4 so I can actually be evil without sounding like a joke.
-
They're getting more than $200 dollars an hour. Millions of people around the world do shit jobs that absolutely wreck their health and don't make that in a year. Difficult to feel much sympathy for them.
-
They're called "voice actors". And why don't they think it's serious? I doubt someone would be like "Hey, let's set up a fake strike." •_•

Edited by Tibbaryllis2: 10/23/2016 11:29:36 PMA four hour session runs $800, and their inability to compromise is an assault on the middle class.... Okay... I guarantee you a thousand people walk past any major develop HQ daily that would be willing to make any noise you ask of them for $200/hr. I bet you 2/3rds of them would do a four hour session for $100. Get outa here with this first world upper class problems. In the meantime, I've been perfectly fine reading my characters lines, when there were character lines to read, for the first twenty years of my life.

Edited by Juice: 10/24/2016 7:08:13 AMCorporations don't care they'll just take the next person who will accept their pay. It's like trying to get a job if you ask for "too much" they'll just take the next person who do just as welll as you.
-
Anyone remember team america?
-
Then I guess we can just go back to voiceless characters and read dialogue boxes. I have zero problem with that if they feel as though a shit-ton-of-money/hour just isn't enough.
-
Hey man, voice acting is what gives us the rich narratives that so many of us love. If they aren't getting paid enough, then they deserve more money.
-
I remember hearing about this earlier. What surprised me the most is how VA's aren't even told their roles when they're hired on.
-
I didn't know things were so hard for voice actors. That's actually one of my dream jobs. >.> Though, I'd prefer to be a voice actor in a television series, rather than video games.
