They only passed because of Republicans, the party of Lincoln. It is a common tactic of Democrats to claim that they did those things because a handful (like maybe 3-5 on some of those things) voted for them. The majorities that passed them were Republican. The next claim is that the Republicans who passed those acts defected to the Democrats and are the Democrats of today. I believe Strom Thurmond was the only one, and I believe he defected so he could continue to be a piece of hurtful being to people, like the rest of the Democrats. The Democrats AKA liberals are the party of the KKK. It's an especially helpful quote since there were multiple Civil Rights Acts. They usually mean the last one (1964). The first Civil Rights Act were a majority of Democrats didn't oppose the bill, though a greater percentage Republicans voted for it than Democrats did. Social Security and Medicare are theirs. Clean Air and Clean Water are Nixon's, along with the EPA. Segregation was ended by Eisenhower a republication and then finished off by Nixon another republican. More schools were desegregated in Nixon's first two years in office (1969 & 1970) than in any other time period before or since. Eisenhower also desegregated the military, which a Democrat had only segregated in WW1. Nixon introduced Affirmative Action, though he only intended to apply it to building trades unions doing business with the Federal government who had refused to hire blacks. Liberals absolutely did not get blacks the right to vote. More Republicans supported women's suffrage and the 19th amendment than Democrats did. It was Democrats who blocked it in Congress in 1915, 1918, and 1919. Republican support for it was almost unanimous by the time it finally passed in a second vote in 1919. Democrats supported it by bare majorities.

19 RepliesBuddy, Republicans gave former slaves the right to vote. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. His VP (I forget the name) even helped pass the laws that allowed blacks to hold government positions. There were at least between 1860 and 1880, I can name them all, before Liberals helped pass the Jim Crow act, effectively ending their right to vote. It wasn't until the 90s that Liberals did anything to help them, and they wouldn't have had to if they'd not passed the Jim Crow act.

Like most things it's true that history and the state of things are more muddled. Yes, the Republican Party was founded in what is today considered a pretty noble and progressive idea. The first Republican President was probably the greatest president in American history and one of the greatest people in human history. With that said Republicans like to remember this 100+ year old history to cope with the horrific elements that have, and continue to exist, within the party today. There have been horribly, horribly evil elements within the Democratic Party too. That segment of the Democratic Party though was purged in the 1960's and migrated to the Republicans. 1964 was a very similar election for the Republicans as this one today. Ten years later and the Republicans were waging a civil war between the party of Eisenhower/Nixon/Ford and Reagan/Bush/Bush that first emerged in the Goldwater campaign. Now that incarnation of the Republicans may be dying to Trumpism. The Democrats are transforming into this broad coalition that may have its own problems. Or it will stick together under the Democratic umbrella which will stand for the original meaning of the party which was more democracy against a quasi fascist/totalitarian Republican Party. The Republican and Democratic parties are [i]old[/i]. I believe the Democrats, Conservatives in Britain, and Republicans are actually the three oldest political parties in the world. They've changed a lot over time.

But let me say this, there are crazy conservatives and radical liberals. Neither side is perfect and we don't always get along. But we can still act like neighbors and care for one another. It isn't that difficult.
