It's so absurd. As much as I love Mass Effect 2, there are asteroids 100 times Commander Shepard's size that burn up to the size of a pebble upon reentry. How in the world did cerberus recover a body?
Posted by: Vgnut117 The problem with that scene is that that character conveniently avoids capture and conveniently meets up with you in a fairly cliche reunion. Want to know what would have been better? Let Ashley/Kaiden get captured. Now you've given the protagonist a personal reason on top of the others to take down the Collectors. You could have then had the reunion during the final mission and not worry about introducing that character in Mass Effect 3 and completely avoided the 'I'm Alliance and can't work with you' bull-blam!-.
That would have been equally cliched, and even rendered the whole purpose of other Romances void. They literally tell you that half the colony was taken, the other half was saved. Why is it "convienent" in your opinion that those who weren't taken start to function normally again. They would've eventually, why not use the opportunity to allow old friends to meet? He didn't survive. The whole premise of the game is that you died, and Cerberus came in (well, Liara actually recovered the body, then gave it to them) and rebuilt Shepard, bringing him back to life. Also, as Jacob said, when he was first brought in he was nothing but "meat and tubes."
Posted by: Roflwaffler
Posted by: Vgnut117 The Horizon bit was sloppy writing. Obviously people are not stupid enough to figure out that the effects wore off. It's the way in which that whole scene was delivered.
It was intentional. The whole point of that scene, as told by the developers, was to stretch your limitations of friendship and loyalty. If you had previously had a romance with that character in the first game they wanted you to feel betrayed. They said they'd track who was loyal by not cheating after that scene to those that felt like they were abandoned using a built-in stat tracker. That's why they promised bonuses for those who stayed loyal to their romance in the first game for the third game.
The problem with that scene is that that character conveniently avoids capture and conveniently meets up with you in a fairly cliche reunion.
Posted by: Roflwaffler Oh for the love of... People take things too literally. That flash of energy you see surrounding him as he gets closer to the planet is just a cheap effect to transfer seemlessly to the nearby sun behind the planet, just before the big "MASS EFFECT 2" thing pops on the screen. It was meant to look cool, not to be taken literally, sigh. It's just as moronic as the people whining about Ashley or Kaidan appearing on Horizon after you defeat the collectors. THE STUN EFFECT ISN'T PERMANENT. People don't take any effort to put the pieces together, but instead rush out and complain about a plot hole that really isn't a plothole at all.
Posted by: Roflwaffler
Posted by: WolfmanMaverick I thought Cerberus just found his body in orbit around the planet?
There's a official comic that explains how Shepards body is actually stolen by the shadow broker and Liara from the first game has to rescue you. She eventually gets the body and hands it over to Cerberus so that they can save you. It explains why she was too busy hunting down the Shadow Broker in ME2 on Illium.
I forgot that. I read it, I guess I meant whoever found his remains, I thought they found them in orbit.

Right, you just played that sequence?Typical. they traced the world they were over and maybe something in the air let him survive. Not EVERY planet is like earth!:0

Idk, but it the start was epic.
Posted by: nuchy When you land on the planet later it's apperant that there is no atmosphere, also after the crash, on the loading screen, it appears a robot went under water and recovered him, he probably landed in wate. That was extremely deep, and he was wearing a suit, also it took billions of dollars to bring him back.
I don't think that cutscene was of his body being recovered. It was a microscopic view of his mangled corpse and dead cells.
Posted by: Porch
Posted by: Sgt Lister I think it's safe to assume that there is no atmosphere to burn him up.
You saw him burn up on re-entry. That means there is an atmosphere.
Posted by: Sgt Lister He must have also landed in some very deep snow or water to keep from being smeared across the landscape.
Landing in water at that speed you most likely tear you to shreds, and if the planets was an ice planet, the snow would of compacted, not one mile of fluffy snow.
In that case, two words: writer's convenience. They purposely didn't explain exactly how exactly his body survived reentry, or for that matter, how they found it when they had an entire planet to search. Don't question, just accept it. It's a video game. [Edited on 04.26.2010 5:16 PM PDT]

When you land on the planet later, it's a barren icy wasteland, and you're forced to wear a helmet. I think it's safe to assume that there is no atmosphere to burn him up. He must have also landed in some very deep snow or water to keep from being smeared across the landscape.

He didn't on mine :(

I think Jacob described him as being nothing more than "meat and tubes" when Cerberus recovered him, so yeah. [Edited on 04.26.2010 5:04 PM PDT]
