Death of a Floodian

Preface: A short story I've been working on. I've never finished one of these, so to get through it all was nice. Don't know if I'll do any more in the future, at least not the near future. Plan to do a Flood history project this year, something on The New Flood, so I won't have the time to write a story. Anyway, I hope you enjoy. If you find the font annoying, just disable my coup and then don't whine to me about it. The Death of a Floodian Kadgar strolled down the dirtied streets, under the glorious green and grey sky of The Flood. It was one of the nicer skies the forum had had in weeks, as he could finally see shades of the sun passing through the cloud. It wasn't as though Kadgar hated seeing a sunny sky, or white fluffy clouds, but he had grown accustomed to the moss covered brick buildings, grey sky, and air that smelled of O-zone. The atmosphere of The Flood no longer prevented him from communicating in a way that he felt comfortable in, and he had been doing so throughout the past week. Kadgar saw a group of fellow Floodians gathering for a conversation, and he felt the urge to join in their conversation. The first one spoke, and it was as if the entire Flood would never be able to fully clean itself of the slimy stupidity that ruptured from this member's mouth. Kadgar knew that he had to at least try, and so he quickly blasted a fiery blast of sarcasm and insults at the moron who had decided to open his mouth. It was at this moment that Kadgar felt himself sharply tugged upwards away from the world beneath him. Startled, he looked around himself and tried to find what was pulling at him. He could see nothing around him other than the blur of buildings, then clouds, and then the first blue sky he had seen in years as he continued to rocket upward. For a quick moment, he felt as though he passed through an invisible membrane, and then he stopped. Kadgar found himself floating in what he could only compare to purgatory. He could see nothing but white in all directions, and if not for the other people he could see, he would have been completely disoriented. The people seemed to be coming and going at a somewhat constant rate, and what appeared to be a similar fashion to how he had arrived there. There was little time to muse on this, however, as a booming voice from behind him drowned out his thoughts. "You have been terminated for your statement on September 12, 2010, at 3:45. Your term of punishment is permanent, but you can ask for a repeal from the officer who banned you. Thank you." This voice had come from a intensely bright, floating sphere. Kadgar could see that it was the center of this plain, and that it was redistributing other people, in a manner similar to how he had been. The voice again started to make the computerized sound it used for a voice, "Would you like to leave now?" "Um I don't know, what is this Yes, I think I woul-" Then, as quickly as he had come there, he was expelled. Flying through the clouds, sky, and past the sun once again, Kadgar found himself situated on the city limit outside of The Flood. He was between the forum and the many groups that outlined it There was no a clear, yellow ring around The Flood forum, one which he had not noticed before. Kadgar did not know what him being "terminated" meant, but he did knew someone in The Flood could tell him, so he strolled in without impediment. Kadgar saw the conversation that he had just been so rudely stolen from, and thought that one of those gentlemen would know what was going on. He strolled up to them, taking glimpses around him, to see if anything would happen again. Nothing happened, and by the time had calmed down, he was at the group of Floodians. He opened his mouth to speak, and again saw himself flying from the ground and up to the realm of that damned floating orb. This time, the voice began to speak the moment he arrived. "You have been terminated for your statement on September 12, 2010, at 3:45. Your term of punishment is permanent, but you can ask for a repeal from the officer who banned you. Thank you." "Yes, yes, you've already told me. What exactly, does this mean, though, I've never had this happen to me before." This disembodied speakbox went into his robotic explanation of these confusing events. "You have been terminated for your statement on September 12, 2009, at 3:45. Your term of punishment is permanent, but you can ask for a repeal from the officer who banned you. You may no longer post in the public areas, but can traverse them freely, though none will see you. You may use all other features of Bungie as you wish, but interacting in a public area is not allowed." "Wait, did you say September 12? That was 3 months ago!" "Yes, your statements have only recently been uncovered, so you are only recently being punished. Are you ready to go now?" "No I'm not ready to go. So, for what I said back then, the standard punishment is a permanent termination?" "No, but we found other statements that build a compelling case showing a series of escalation, and so you have been banned. Are you ready to go now?" "No, I'm not ready to go! This is retarded, but you said I could appeal this, right?" "That is correct, are you ready to go now?" "Yes, I'm ready to go. Happy now?" By the time Kadgar finished his sentence, he was again standing on the outskirts of The Flood. This time however, he noticed the members that had started to appear from nowhere outside the forum. However, these members weren't flying downward, like he had, they simply appeared out of mid-air. Many of them, in fact seemed to be constantly changing their appearance. Some simply walked from the groups and changed their appearance before right before they got into the forum. [Edited on 04.26.2010 1:23 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: NGAGE SHTDWN This story was OK, but dull. I could see the main idea, but it still lacked expression in some way. The voice acting was merely turd because, again, it was dull. No action in anyway, or at least sensory details that would let us FEEL it. The ending was a WTF? moment - no special prize or anything. If you were trying to prove a point, and I think you were, you should have just told us straight out.
I know, but I would rather do a story, because I haven't done one of those yet. I'm not especially proud of it, but I think I got the point across. Dialogue has always been one of my weak points. It's just nice to finish it. [Edited on 04.26.2010 3:47 PM PDT]

 •
Posted by: xXPhantomLinkXx I loved it. It is very well written and you should make a little book about it. If you make more storys like this you could have made book like: The Flood storys. History 1: Death of a Floodian History 2:... and so on, but maybe this isnt my best idea.
I've thought about doing so, but I wasn't really sure if I wanted to go that much farther into it. What would the next step be: Birth of a Floodian? Life of a Floodian? Neither sets themselves up as well as this one does.

 • Although this bewildered him, Kadgar didn't know any of these people, and so he simply went to one of his group. He could talk to his friends about that problem there. Kadgar headed to his favorite group, Thee Warriors, to see if anyone would know what was going on, and how he could participate in the forum again. He was new to the forums, but he had been expelled from other city-states before, so he was not unfamiliar with their procedures. However, in most other areas, you were prevented from ever returning within the limits of the capital because of permanent tattoos that were placed on you to identify you from other members. Certainly, you could get the tattoo removed, but it was expensive, and few people took the time to learn how. Luckily for Kadgar, he didn't have to pry too deeply into the question to get an answer from multiple members. They explained how some members were able to clear their centers of a link to their normal selves, and were then able to create new persons. These persons would not be clear of the tattoos and other physical marks that were used by many city-states to recognize individual, but the changes were enough to avoid detection by The Flood's detection force. As he absorbed all of this, Kadgar, realized the potential that this offered for activities in the forum. No longer was he bound by the rules of the forum. Once he broke a rule, he could merely change to a new personality, and then he could go back to doing what he was before. None would be the wiser, unless he was found out. Even if he wasn't banned, he now had the option to mess with his friends and avoid trouble on his primary identity. Well, that was if he could get his primary account termination The devil, though, was in the details. He first had to learn the process to gather the focus in order to create the personalities. Not only that, but if he was caught, Kadgar knew that he would be terminated, as would any other accounts that could be associated with him. Of course, he could create new ones, but it was quite the nuisance nonetheless. These problems were small enough to not dissuade him from searching out someone who could help him learn how to create these secondary personalities, and within a few short weeks he succeeded, and not long after that he had mastered the technique of how to create personalities. However, just because he could create the personalities, it did not necessarily follow that he could use them properly. As he walked up to the border of The Flood, Kadgar realized that he had not created a name for this new personality, and settled on xX 42Kadgar777 Xx, hoping it would be different enough to not be immediately identifiable. His hopes were misplaced, and he found himself zooming up to the giant orb once again. Kadgar tried to play dumb, hoping that he would be able to get out of the situation he was in at the moment. "So, um, what is this place. I've never been here before," stammered Kadgar sheepishly. "Kadgar, you have been banned for impersonating another account. This account has been permabanned." "But, I'm just xX 42Kadgar777 Xx. I'm not impersonating anyone." "You suck at lying, everyone knows you are Kadgar. Enjoy your ban." Once again, Kadgar found himself on the outskirts of the forum. "Well that sucked. Time to try out another personality. I think I'll use a less obvious name this time, though." Kadgar switched to a new personality, calling this one xX RamMcgeePhoenix Xx. It wasn't especially creative, but no one would expect that it was Kadgar, none of the people he normally hung out with anyway. It was when he started to talk to those people, that Kadgar realized there was a problem. Although his friends were able to recognize his voice, everyone else just assumed he was some stupid new member. He couldn't explain to them who he was, because then he would be caught. There was of course an advantage to being unknown; he could now know what people thought about him dying. They didn't have much to say. "Yeah, Kadgar is gone, don't know why." "Kadgar, I don't know if he's gone or not." "Kadgar was annoying." After hearing this for a day, Kadgar headed back to Thee Warriors, said nothing to his friends and sulked in his room. He sat down, and came to the realization that although he could avoid punishment, he was still effectively dead. Certainly, his friends recognized him, but that didn't matter. His period of work to get his name recognized and his opinion respected were effectively worthless. He could either start from scratch, and try and get them back to the level that they once were, or he could make sure that everyone knew who he was by doing the standard attention grabbers (assault, controversial activities, etc.). Of course, doing those activities will often get you the ire of the moderators, but Kadgar didn't care now that he had separate personalities. They certainly weren't useful for reinserting himself into the main community, at least not in the way that he was used to. However, they did give him an opportunity that he never would have had before: With the multiple identities he could now switch between from freely, he was practically free of any moderator control. Kadgar knew that these activities would become so well known that they would all be associated with him. Removing any one identity did no harm, as he could create more without much effort. As long as he had this ability, he would be able to remain popular and active, as before, but now it was without the limitations on his activities that had held him back before. Kadgar never went to talk to the moderator who banned him.
