The Assault Rifle in Halo 3, to me, always seemed... lackluster, not due to its power, but due to the noise it makes, and the very soft vibtration the controller gives.
The Assault Rifle in ODST had an improved sound, a louder, deeper 'bang' to it when fired, unlike Halo 3's soft rattling noise - definately a step in the right direction.
The SMG always felt much more comfortable and 'right', due to its better sound and stronger kick from the vibration, which, for me, always made it easier to aim in bursts at longer ranges. (Don't ask how lol)
For Reach, give the Assault Rifle a louder, deeper 'bang', and also more of a kick in the vibration from the controller.
As Bungie has said, a gun can be made to made to seem awesome just by changing how it feels, not its power =)
Heres hoping... See you in May.

C'mon Sage, don't let us down!

I loved the Assault Rifle in halo 1 and Halo 3 I liked it but never LOVED it and in Reach this new one will bring back the love for the AR
-
If it has a little bit more power, the AR will be awesome. It's my favourite weapon in H3. I hope it will be in HR too.

Have faith in 'The Beard'. He will give us balance. And a super awesome experience.
Posted by: Gottalovec4 The Reach AR definately seems like a step in the right direction. It can actually be used in all ranges like an Assault Rifle can actually be used but it is best at close to mid range. In Halos 3 and CE it was more like a Sub Machine Gun because of it's innacuracy and in Halo 3:The popgun sound. In Reach it will be more tactical in it's use because of the bloom reticule. So you CAN snipe someone from halfway across Boneyard with an AR you will just have to fire indevidual shots.
I agree, all it needs is a power boost

I think the AR will be amazing in Reach, because Bungie® is balancing all the weapons (and other stuff) out, the AR will be more powerfull.

I'm waiting to the Beta before I make my full opinion, but I really hope they make the AR decent.
-
if you look at where he is jetpacking and shooting with an AR near the start of the ViDoc the AR looks more accurate too! [Edited on 04.25.2010 6:00 AM PDT]

Basically: Reach Range: Fine Reach Sound: Awesome Reach Power: Sucks

Couldn't agree more darkslayer.

What always annoyed me was the fact that the AR was so weak, I love the AR, but I usually have to abandon it for a BR. It needs more power for Reach, if it's gonna have a useful role as the close-to-mid range rifle. [Edited on 04.25.2010 5:55 AM PDT]

Of course! I had forgotten about those sound clips, thanks for pulling em out =) - and yeas, that is definately the way to go!

Here you go. Had to dig a bit but there was one Bungie update that had some gun sound effects. That is the assault rifle. Sounds better than Halo 3's.
