[quote]John key, the New Zealand prime minister, has defended the country’s high immigration rate, saying that foreign workers were needed because employers found native Kiwis either too lazy or dependent on drugs.
Mr Key admitted that high rates of immigration were straining public services and infrastructure but said his government would adhere to its open-door policy to fill job vacancies.
In his weekly radio appearance, he said of New Zealand workers: “Ask the employers and they will say some of these people won’t pass a drug test, some of these people won’t turn up for work, some of these people will claim they have health issues later on.” His comments came after figures showed that 69,000 migrants arrived in New Zealand in the year to July while 200,000 citizens are jobless.
New Zealand does demand certain skills as an entry requirement for immigrants but the threshold is much lower than under Australia’s regime.
In response to Mr Key, Richard Wagstaff, president of the Council of Trade Unions, said: “Demonising New Zealand workers and not giving them a shot at these jobs is the wrong way to go.”
Andrew Little, Labour Party leader, said: “There are a whole heap of young people who some employers and clearly the government write off as drugged and lazy, as an excuse not to make the extra effort to get them into work.”
