And this is one of the reasons I, as someone working towards being in the field, hate pop-sci. Pop-sci media outlets over inflate shit and jump to conclusions about random fluctuations in some measurement all the time, and people think it's reliable information because they've dubbed themselves as "science."
Here's a protip: a ground-based telescope is not going to find aliens. Done deal. There is simply too much shit in the way.
Sorry for being curt, but this pop-sci meme is actually very annoying for someone who actually cares about this shit.

Bump. More people need to know that the mainstream media wants to tell a juicy story, not inform the public.
-
But Harambe died. That has to count for something...

damn...

Thank you.

I love SMBC.

I personally like to think we are not alone in the universe other wise it would be boring to be the only race in the universe.

Edited by The Cellar Door: 8/31/2016 2:54:21 AMI don't believe for a second that we are, however I'm still going to be realistic and realize that currently we simply are not technologically advanced enough to find life wherever it may hide. If there was a carbon copy of us sitting at the nearest star, we would have absolutely no idea.

True, but the chance that we find the life is extremely low.

Thanks for your input. I read the Berkley forum posts, and realize it's nothing. I just thought I'd share it anyway. It's still more interesting than people's shitty Destiny cosplay outfits.

I completely agree, and the point of posting this is not to dissuade anyone from posting about science, or to tell anyone that they shouldn't be interested, more over I just want to make sure people are interpreting information in the correct manner. Pop-sci causes a lot of misconceptions about science, this indirectly ends up hurting it's integrity.

Pero like I'm a alien and like you can see me through a telescope so like yeah Holmes.

Who peed in your tin foil hat?

I can't take any advice from someone who actually likes Kanye West.

too true, this dweeb is pathetic

Thanks for posting this

One of the few things I agree with you on. Also, if it was actual aliens or other extraterrestrials capable of sending a message, the government would do literally anything to cover that up, for both safety and other reasons unknown to me
-
The government couldn't cover shit up if we found aliens, don't believe that lmao
The government couldn't cover shit up if we found aliens, don't believe that lmao
This, like your original post, is true. Notice how many people here (and on the intenet in general) think that they know a lot about science (or more specifically, physics, which seems to be a popular subject that people pretend to be good at) just because they watched a Stephen Hawking special on TV. It's annoying as hell. Pop-Sci really ruins stuff for the people actually interested. It's a huge pain in the ass. Those who worked their ass of to gain knowledge throughout college and beyond seem to be squabbled by these morons. Rant over.
-
My favorite is people who pretend to know quantum mechanics and proceed to tell me about Schrödinger's cat. Lmao.
-
And "The Big Bamg Theory" TV show doesn't help.
-
What about cat mechanics?
